In this presentation, we will discuss what happens to low-income countries like Zanzibar, when tourists arrive and continue their western lifestyle in a tropical setting with scare resources. We will among other focus on the wastewater generated, the consequences of water use and the tons of solid waste generated by the tourists.

In this project, you will explore a real-world problem, and then work through a series of steps to analyze that problem, research ways the problem could be solved, then propose a possible solution to that problem. Often, there are no specific right or wrong solutions, but sometimes one particular solution may be better than others. The key is making sure you fully understand the problem, have researched some possible solutions, and have proposed the solution that you can support with information / evidence.Begin by reading the problem statement in Step 1. Take the time to review all the information provided in the statement, including exploring the websites, videos and / or articles that are linked. Then work on steps 2 through 8 to complete this problem-based learning experience.

The lesson presents a definition of sex and asserts consent is a key aspect of healthy sexual experiences. Students will define the various parts of consent and review Oregon’s laws regarding consent, sex, and minors. They will investigate what influences their decisions about sex, and will then follow a fictional couple through various decision-making processes around deciding to or not to have sex, the use of birth control, pregnancy options, and decisions around parenting. Students will also research local reproductive and sexual health clinics.

The following unit engages students with archival material related to the yellow fever epidemic during the construction of the Panama Canal. The unit framework and primary sources can be integrated into classrooms of grades 4-8. Each lesson has student objectives that can be accomplished within 40-minute periods over the course of several weeks. Students will learn about archives, primary and secondary sources through the lens of the yellow fever. They will make connections to other public health campaigns such as tuberculosis and Covid. Applying present day awareness strategies, students will create their own public health campaigns for yellow fever in the form of “challenges,” hashtags, posters, billboard mockups, and bulletins. Support materials are integrated into the lessons, and the selected primary source documents can be found at the end of the unit

This activity is a field investigation where students gather data on stream health by collecting macro-invertebrates at three different locations and then develop an experimental question through land use and topographic map research to explain differences in water quality.

The unit focuses on the question How can people help end pandemics? It is designed to teach students about the COVID-19 pandemic, transmission of the COVID-19 virus, and the impacts of the pandemic on communities. Over the course of the unit, students will study the COVID-19 pandemic in light of historical pandemics to build an understanding of the following key concepts:
• How the COVID-19 virus spreads from person to person and through communities, • How strategies to reduce transmission of COVID-19 work, • How the actions of individuals can help to end pandemics.
The unit also supports the development of two social emotional competencies: self awareness and social awareness.

This resource is a video abstract of a research paper created by Research Square on behalf of its authors. It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:
"Nanotechnology has long held the promise of a better tomorrow. But it’s not without controversy. In a popular doomsday scenario, for example, we find our planet engulfed by self-replicating nano-bots, a runaway programming error in a nanomaterial designed to clean up the environment. True, the scenario is science fiction rather than science fact, but it does touch on the fear that nanomaterials pose a public health risk. Tiny nanoparticles can, in fact, nestle themselves in our bodies with a single breath. The question is, how long do they stay there? A UK study suggests that the long-term accumulation of nanoparticles in the vital organs of rats warrants a closer look at the bodily effects of nanomaterials. Most animal studies have shown that breathable nanoparticles that are lodged in the lungs are typically cleared within a few months, with fewer than 1 percent traveling to other organs, such as the brain, liver, or kidneys..."

Child-welfare professionals and mental health therapists serving children and families who are achieving permanency through adoption/guardianship often have a limited understanding of the complex issues that complicate or contribute to common mental health problems. These include trauma; grief; loss; identity and many others. This presentation will highlight the need for adoption mental health competency training for child-welfare and mental-health professionals; and it will present the National Adoption Competency Mental Health Training Initiative’s (NTI) efforts to create systems change to better address the mental health needs of children who have achieved permanency through adoption or guardianship. NTI has piloted a state-of-the-art; evidence-informed; web-based training initiative. This presentation will discuss the pilot (which includes California); core competencies of the curriculum; initial evaluation findings; and challenges and successes of implementing a web-based curriculum in our pilot sites.
Immune cells protect our bodies from both self-derived threats and exogenous pathogens, …
Immune cells protect our bodies from both self-derived threats and exogenous pathogens, while keeping peace with normal cells and non-harmful commensal microbiota. They have various mechanisms to perform these tasks, a capacity that is essential for maintaining homeostasis. However, these same mechanisms can backfire, resulting in severe disorders such as immunodeficiency, chronic inflammation, allergy, degenerative diseases, and cancer. This course discusses the connections between normal physiology and disease by examining the developmental relationship between innate and adaptive immune cells as well as the functions and malfunctions of immune cells. The course familiarizes students with both basic biological principles (such as cell death and immune cell signaling) and clinical applications (such as immune checkpoint blockade). More generally, students learn to identify relevant primary research literature, critically evaluate experimental data, and reach their own conclusions based on primary data. This course is one of many Advanced Undergraduate Seminars offered by the Biology Department at MIT. These seminars are tailored for students with an interest in using primary research literature to discuss and learn about current biological research in a highly interactive setting. Many instructors of the Advanced Undergraduate Seminars are postdoctoral scientists with a strong interest in teaching.

In this presentation, we will discuss how saltwater intrusion affects small islands freshwater supplies, and how tourism is a significant part of this. In Zanzibar fresh water for drinking and other purposes come from rain that replenishes the island’s groundwater reservoir and in many cases freshwater is a scarce resource. On top of this, the excessive pumping in groundwater for the tourist industry increases the risk of salt water seeping into the freshwater magazine from the sea, thereby destroying the freshwater resource.
