Statewide dual credit (SDC) classes are college-level courses taught at the high-school level by trained high-school teachers. All SDC courses culminate in a challenge exam which is used to assess mastery of the postsecondary-level learning objectives. Students who meet or exceed the exam ‘cut score’ receive college credit that can be applied to any Tennessee public postsecondary institution.  This course is an introduction to the field of agricultural business, including some of the basic tools and concepts of decision making. Concepts are illustrated in terms of selected current social and economic issues in the industry of production agriculture and agricultural business. 

Fourth in a series of videos from Khan Academy and 23andMe that introduces human prehistory, this video describes how agriculture changed human societies and genetics throughout the world.

This activity has students work together to summarize regional effects of climate change and other environmental issues, which a focus on how these issues may influence agriculture and water availability. Students present a region to the group and create a layperson summary of the effects of climate change and other environmental change on their region.

Participating in this hands-on lesson, students in grades 6-8 will lead each other through the integration and application of a real-life situation. This lesson provides a PowerPoint and worksheets to help students understand precision agriculture and its use of geographic information systems to help farmers use a sustainable growing method.  Students will then integrate their knowledge and skills to create their own mini irrigation system.

This lesson from the National Agriculture in the Classroom Matrix is designed to teach students about the parts of honey bees, the stages of the lifecycle, and the role honey bees play in pollination. There are three activities including materials lists, vocabulary words, background connections, support documents, step-by-step procedures, and support videos. 

Urban forests provide many benefits to a community and can minimize the human impact on the environment. Students will explore the impacts an urban community has on the environment. Students will discover the role trees play in an urban community and how trees can affect the ecosystem, human wellbeing, and provide economic value. Students will explore Indigenous relationships with trees. During the course of this storyline, students will measure and monitor urban forest ecosystem benefits, perform a field investigation, and design a development to minimize negative environmental impacts

Students will learn how trees grow and cycle matter, and trees’ roles in a changing climate. The urban heat island effect is examined and students learn about the many benefits trees offer cities. The storyline culminates with students examining the trees and canopy cover in their or a nearby city and proposing actions to increase the urban forest through a letter to city officials.

Students will observe the physical characteristics of flowers and explore the principles of pollination with this 3rd-5th grade lesson. From Bee Dancing to flower direction, this lesson will engage young minds and explore the miracle of flower reproduction with some amazing little pollinators! 

The curriculum was developed in two documents. The first document is the instructor’s
guide. This guide leads the instructor through units, a sample teaching calendar, all lesson plans,
lab instructions, and student worksheets. The second document is the student’s guide. This
document includes all note taking guides, activity sheets, and lab sheets the students will need to
be successful in the course.

In accordance with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal #2: “Zero Hunger” which promotes sustainable agriculture, students are asked to help support the local pollinator population. Seedballs can be prepared with seeds of plants that provide food and nesting opportunities for pollinating bees, butterflies, other insects, bats, and birds. Thus, students are supporting the very beings that ensure the success of our food chain and 1 out of every 3 bites that we take. In this lesson students make seedballs and a model of a catapult for distributing the seedballs using Strawbees, a micro:bit, and the Robotic Inventions kit.

This is a version of a comprehensive Foundational SAE or SAE for All.  It is a portfolio of lessons and activities to be copied and shared with students, which they fill in, manipulate, and track through their time in middle school and high school agricultural education. Climate change adaptation isn’t always welcome as a topic of conversation, even among those who could benefit from it. A recent study hints at a possible path forward.

This introductory lesson presents an overview of the applications associated with the oxy-fuel welding and cutting processes.  Learners will be exposed to the equipment associated with the process as well as the fundamentals and applications necessary to accurately weld and cut using the process. This lesson should only be used if the instructor has previous experience in oxy-fuel welding.  The instructor must add additional safety protocols associated with the manufacturers of the equipment and school guidelines.
