This is the first lesson in a sequential unit. Students look at and discuss still-life paintings and develop a definition for the genre. They then further their understanding of this type of painting and practice watercolor techniques by painting their own still lifes from direct observation. Art production focuses on the tools used to create the illusion of three-dimensional space and convey texture in watercolors.

Students create a class alphabet book or "ABCDarium," a book that uses images of animals or objects to illustrate each letter of the alphabet. The book is in the style of a medieval illuminated manuscript and incorporates both art and writing. Students decorate large uppercase letters of the alphabet and draw an original picture to illustrate each letter.

This is a one-hour guided drawing lesson in which students will gain knowledge about composition and line. Students will build a personal drawing vocabulary by experimenting with various tools to create their own unique lines and marks using traditional art media. Students will create two original drawings in a one-hour "en plein air", or outdoor, session.

Students will make connections between their personal experiences and a work of art and use visual analysis to describe a portrait.
