"The TAM subfamily of receptor kinases has been implicated in tumor development and progression. Their roles in efferocytosis, regulation of immune cells, secretion of inflammatory factors, and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition make them key players in tumor development and progression. But TAM signaling is not always beneficial to tumor growth. In glioblastoma (GBM), the most prevalent and lethal primary brain tumor in adults it appears that TAM receptors may also have anti-tumor effects. While upregulation of TAM signaling is usually associated with GBM development, progression, and poor prognosis, TAM receptors may also activate pathways that trigger anti-tumor immune responses and their immunosuppressive role in the tumor microenvironment may obstruct GBM progression..."

This lesson explores the similarities between how a human being moves/walks and how a robot moves. This allows students to see the human body as a system, i.e., from the perspective of an engineer. It shows how movement results from (i) decision making, i.e., deciding to walk and move, and (ii) implementing the decision by conveying the decision to the muscle (human) or motor (robot).

"Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the leading cause of dementia in the aged population. The key feature of AD is the deposition of two different kinds of protein aggregates in the brain, and at the point of aggregate formation, treatment becomes difficult. A recent study focused on how to prevent the aggregation of one protein: the microtubule-associated protein Tau, which forms neurofibrillary tangles. Following up on research indicating that polyphenolic compounds can serve as neuroprotective agents, researchers analyzed the ability of the polyphenol Baicalein to inhibit the aggregation of Tau. In vitro, Baicalein blocked Tau aggregation and paired helical filament dissolution via an oligomer capture and dissociation mechanism. It also dissolved preformed mature fibrils of Tau, creating Tau oligomers, with no effect on the viability of neuronal cells..."

In this activity, students design and build neuron models based on observations made while viewing neurons through a microscope. The models are used to explain how each structure of the neuron contributes to the overall function.
