The Maryland State Department of Education is working to prevent the misuse and abuse of opioids. This is a student-centered lesson for the K-2 grade band. This lesson can be modified or remixed to meet the needs of the students you teach. The content of this lesson includes teaching students the ground rules for taking medicine as well as having student identify under what circumstances they should be taking medicine.

Students examine the structure and function of the human eye, learning some amazing features about our eyes, which provide us with sight and an understanding of our surroundings. Students also learn about some common eye problems and the biomedical devices and medical procedures that resolve or help to lessen the effects of these vision deficiencies, including vision correction surgery.

The target learner will have started in a dental hygiene program and have basic knowledge of common medical emergencies that may occur in the dental office. As a dental hygiene student, this lesson will enhance the learner's knowledge on basic emergency drug use as a dental hygienist in a clinic. Ideally, the learner would have completed the lesson regarding emergency drugs in their pharmacology course and can utilize this lesson as a supplement to self refelect on their retention of knowledge and key take aways.

Students reinforce their knowledge of the different parts of the digestive system and explore the concept of simulation by developing a pill coating that can withstand the churning actions and acidic environment found in the stomach. Teams test the coating durability by using a clear soda to simulate stomach acid.

In an article recently published in the journal Advances in Therapy, researchers discuss how dry powder inhalers work, what makes them stand out, and what patients and prescribers should look for in a device. The active drug in dry powder inhalers is composed of microparticles loaded onto larger carrier particles. The inhalers’ unique internal design converts patient’s inhalation into shear forces that deagglomerate the drug particles from carriers.
