The Spanish Language Immersion School is a public school with dedicated educators and committed parents who are creating an extraordinary experience for kids from K to Grade 5. Students arrive speaking English as their dominant language. They leave fluent in Spanish, but also filled with knowledge about various cultures, practiced in diversity, and possessing real skills that give them an educational and career advantage.

Go Away, Big Green Monster! Ed Emberley's tale about a scary, multicolored monster is used to help students build their reading fluency and word recognition skills. In this lesson, students chorally read the story and then point out familiar color words or sight words that appear in the story. After finishing the story, students are introduced to four different literacy center activities that include participating in a read along, building word families with story words, playing a memory game with color words from the story, and retelling story events using sentence strips. In the sessions that follow, students create their own artwork of the big green monster and use that artwork to help them write a story. Students use both self- and peer-editing to improve their writing. Completed stories are either published on the Internet or in a class book.

This unit is designed to prepare teacher candidates to assess and instruct students to improve reading fluency in a K-5th grade classroom. In the unit, participants will learn about the three components of fluency, consider the impact of fluency in relation to comprehension, and investigate strategies leading to reading fluency using a structured literacy approach to teaching reading. The total time to complete this assignment is approximately 6 hours. 

Amori wants to move her reading up a level so she'll be ready for more difficult material in 6th grade. Rick shows her how certain spellings can help her with pronunciation, an area shes been having trouble with.

While students read silently in class, Rick has time to focus on individual students and their particular reading challenges. He works on vocabulary, comprehension and reading speed, using a variety of methods to help his students improve.
