CS Principles 2019-2020 8.3: Making Data Visualizations
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted
CC BY-NC-SA
Rating
0.0 stars

Now that students have had the chance to see and evaluate various data visualizations, they will learn to make visualizations of their own. This lesson teaches students how to build visualizations from provided datasets. The levels in Code Studio provide a detailed walkthrough of how to use Google Sheets to create several different kinds of charts. While this lesson focuses on the Google Sheets tool, other tools may be substituted at the teacher’s discretion, and MS Excel support is coming soon to the lesson.

The main activity teaches students to build different chart types (scatter, line, and bar charts) from a single data set. It should be emphasized to students that the purpose of this lesson is to explore and experiment with creating different types of visualizations, not to build the perfect chart. Students will have a chance to create and customize their own charts. At the end of class, students compare their custom visualizations with those of their classmates.

Easing Into Open Science: A Guide for Graduate Students and Their Advisors
Unrestricted Use
CC BY
Rating
0.0 stars

This article provides a roadmap to assist graduate students and their advisors to engage in open science practices. We suggest eight open science practices that novice graduate students could begin adopting today. The topics we cover include journal clubs, project workflow, preprints, reproducible code, data sharing, transparent writing, preregistration, and registered reports. To address concerns about not knowing how to engage in open science practices, we provide a difficulty rating of each behavior (easy, medium, difficult), present them in order of suggested adoption, and follow the format of what, why, how, and worries. We give graduate students ideas on how to approach conversations with their advisors/collaborators, ideas on how to integrate open science practices within the graduate school framework, and specific resources on how to engage with each behavior. We emphasize that engaging in open science behaviors need not be an all or nothing approach, but rather graduate students can engage with any number of the behaviors outlined.

Marbling Paper
Unrestricted Use
CC BY
Rating
0.0 stars

Marbling paper is a form of art that produces "monotypes"--every piece is unique because of the process! It also has a long history as a form of art and decoration. This resource includes a video tutorial detailing how to marble paper yourself. Use it to support Maryland Visual Arts Standards for Grades 6-8 or Maryland Social Studies Frameworks for Grade 7. For Visual Arts Standard 1, indicator I:6-8:1, have students first research the history of sumi, ebru, or monotyping, then plan a marbled work to reflect the same motivations as historic artists using one of those forms. For example, sumi may reflect concerns about the future since some historians believe it was related to ink divination, so a student could marble over a calendar that is relevant to them, a sketch of a future event, a saying about the future, or even try to marble a pattern like a calendar page. For Grade 7, Content Topic "Geographic Characteristics" have students map different appearances of paper marbling mentioned in the video along with their date and express whether they think the spread can be attributed to a single discovery that traveled, multiple discoveries that spread, or multiple independent discoveries. Students could even marble over these maps. If you evaluate or use this resource, please respond to this short (4 question) survey here bit.ly/3dfwEK8
