This is a unit plan covering the history of the surgery. It is designed to take about 35 days (50-minute class periods). This unit is based on the book, The Butchering Art: Joseph Lister’s Quest to Transform the Grisly World of Victorian Medicine by Lindsey Fitzharris. For each of the chapters, vocab activities, pre-reading activities, and reflection questions have been created. A final project is included at the end of the unit. To grade this unit, the book is chunked into Portfolios (Prologue to Chapter 4, Chapters 5-8, Chapter 9 to Epilogue), which are designed to be the formative grades. Each of these Portfolios has a Portfolio Checksheet, which is a list of assignments that must be turned in for that unit. The Portfolios can be returned to the students and used on the final project. The final project is the summative grade for the unit. Quizzes could be added to this unit to increase the number of summative grades. To make this unit easier to facilitate, I would suggest purchasing the Audio Book, along with the hardcopies to help read to the class.

This is a project based course designed to help middle school students explore career options using the Nebraska Career Education Model and understand the Nebraska Career Readiness Standards. The course is organized by three themes – Making it My Choice, A World of Options and Charting a Direction – with culminating individual and group projects. Students will define career clusters and pathways, describe examples of career readiness, utilize self-assessments to better understand interests, establish a career portfolio and create a personal learning plan to provide direction to high school and post-high school activities. The students will watch a video on the structure of the circulatory system, then they  will observe their heart rates and investigate how carrying extra weight affects their heart rate.

OverviewThis lesson introduces ethical standards of healthcare to students. Students will understand guiding ethical principles and their application to a career field’s code of ethics. This lesson provides an overview of common health insurance plans. This lesson will also introduce how health insurance processes can sometimes impact patient care. Students will create a beginning resume that represents their current work experience and demonstrates their knowledge of rhetorical situations for professional writing.

OverviewThis lesson introduces students to historic medical discoveries by focusing on the individuals and medical innovations that advanced the field. Students will create “About Me” pages for individuals and create a presentation about medical innovations. Finally, a timeline is created for students to identify trends and reflect on the importance of history to the field.  StandardsHS.HS.6.1.a Identify the history of health care.

OverviewThis lesson gives students the opportunity to learn about the various ways to measure pulse and temperature. Students will complete activities measuring these vital signs.  StandardsHS.HS.6.4.d Demonstrate procedures for measuring and recording vital signs.
