This course takes a ‘back to the beginning’ view that aims to better understand the end result. What might be the developmental processes that lead to the organization of ‘booming, buzzing confusions’ into coherent visual objects? This course examines key experimental results and computational proposals pertinent to the discovery of objects in complex visual inputs. The structure of the course is designed to get students to learn and to focus on the genre of study as a whole; to get a feel for how science is done in this field.

The teaching of histology increasingly relies on digital resources in lieu of traditional microscope laboratories. Digital Histology provides an open educational resource that combines a digital atlas with extensive descriptive text. It is organized as a multi-hierarchy outline that reinforces broader histological concepts and parallels the content of most histology textbooks. Digital Histology, featuring on-demand labeling of structures and interactive quizzes with formative feedback, can be used by a diverse group of learners.
The initial display page (Main Menu) lists the major chapter headings organized in a hierarchical structure that follows content areas used in most modern histology textbooks. Each heading contains a small arrow indicating that the tab leads to a deeper menu structure. Clicking on one of these tabs displays a submenu to the right. The same convention holds for lower levels of the hierarchy. Tabs not displaying an arrow lead directly to program content.
Program content is organized as pages. Each page consists of an image with a title and a descriptive text included beneath it. To the right of the image is a list of labels indicating the structures identified in the image. Click each label to display indicators and highlights on the image that identify that structure. Immune cells protect our bodies from both self-derived threats and exogenous pathogens, while keeping peace with normal cells and non-harmful commensal microbiota. They have various mechanisms to perform these tasks, a capacity that is essential for maintaining homeostasis. However, these same mechanisms can backfire, resulting in severe disorders such as immunodeficiency, chronic inflammation, allergy, degenerative diseases, and cancer. This course discusses the connections between normal physiology and disease by examining the developmental relationship between innate and adaptive immune cells as well as the functions and malfunctions of immune cells. The course familiarizes students with both basic biological principles (such as cell death and immune cell signaling) and clinical applications (such as immune checkpoint blockade). More generally, students learn to identify relevant primary research literature, critically evaluate experimental data, and reach their own conclusions based on primary data. This course is one of many Advanced Undergraduate Seminars offered by the Biology Department at MIT. These seminars are tailored for students with an interest in using primary research literature to discuss and learn about current biological research in a highly interactive setting. Many instructors of the Advanced Undergraduate Seminars are postdoctoral scientists with a strong interest in teaching.

This seminar will focus on dynamical change in biogeochemical cycles accompanying early animal evolution – beginning with the time of the earliest known microscopic animal fossils (~600 million years ago) and culminating (~100 million years later) with the rapid diversification of marine animals known as the “Cambrian explosion.” Recent work indicates that this period of intense biological evolution was both a cause and an effect of changes in global biogeochemical cycles.
