In this activity, students will read an article about factors to consider when renting a vacation property. Then, they will compare lists with a partner or in a small group to come to a consensus on the five most important factors. Students will work together to find a vacation rental in a francophone area that incorporates their considerations and will present their choice to the class. As a possible extension on this activity, students can choose an accommodation and write a mock review of the accommodation.

Students planning to live or interact with Arabs from the Middle East and North Africa have a tendency to speak without using typical words to express their meaning. There are hand gestures, non-word sounds, and other country specific actions that one might do depending on a situation. Students will learn 5 hand gestures and compare these to those of their home country as well as learn the accompanying “real words” that accompany these gestures, signs, and actions.

During the warm-up students will review how to sign shapes and the cardinal numbers from the slideshow. For the main activity, students will pair up and each grab a picture card without showing it to their partner. One student will describe the picture card being specific to location, color, etc, while the other draws what their partner just described to them. The partners will then switch roles.
