Inquiry Project (Reconstruction Debate Project)
1) Activity 1
● What is your first activity?
The main activity would be a debate where students will form groups based on their personal answers (after finding their answers through research). These groups will go against each other in a bracket-style format (provided that there are enough groups). Students will be able to prepare talking points, gather data to prove their points, as well as prepare pre-written material to read (if they are uncomfortable performing in a debate setting).
● Why do you think this is a good activity for PBL?
○ Debating is a natural part of existing with other people. Building communication skills and honing one’s ability to make points is necessary if students are going to work in 21st Century, collaborative environments.
○ The student’s answer to the original question is the final product, and therefore they will be required to explain it and defend it from other students.
○ The debate would be in groups, therefore students would be required to collaborate in order to succeed.
○ A Rubric will be provided to students who are not currently participating in the debate. The facilitators will also use these rubrics.
