TRENCHES IN THE FIRST WORLD WAR

Main activities

The teacher presents to the students the audio extract, and explains that they are going to listen to the voice of a survivor of the Great War describing his first impact with the trenches in the Somme front, and how shocking it was.

Then he allows them to listen three/four times to the audio extract, and gives some further instructions

-          First listening: relax, listen and catch the general meaning of the extract

-          Second listening: the teacher provides students with a sheet containing a fill in the blank exercise with 10 sentences concerning the audio extract, and asks them to write down answers while listening

-          Third/fourth listening: complete and check the answers

At the end the teacher picks ten pupils, and ask them in turn to read one of the sentences. The other pupils listen to them, checking their exercises, and rise their hand in order to correct their classmates if they did any mistake.
