Intro to 3D Modeling w SketchUp

Introduction

Lesson Hook

We will begin by watching this six-minute video: 10 Strangest Buildings in the World

Students should use the AEIOU Discovery Education Spotlight on Strategy Graphic Organizer to organize their thoughts. Consider watching the video one time through without asking the students to take notes and then watch a second time stopping throughout the video to give time for students to write down their thoughts.

Practicing Basic Skills

Intro to SketchUp

The next step is to learn a bit about 3D design and specifically how to use Sketch-Up. Using the attached 1-page Hyperdoc students should familiarize themselves with Sketch-Up and the basics of designing in 3D on the computer.

Apply New Learning

Students are now ready for hands-on practice in SketchUp. Students should complete this SketchUp for Schools Introduction Tutorial

Making a Turtle Sandbox

Using the SketchUp for Schools video linked below, students can practice how to make 3D models in SketchUp. We will begin with all students recreating a Turtle Sandbox.

Project Proposal & Management

Project Proposal & Timeline

After reviewing the project objective, students should complete the attached project proposal worksheet. Students will need to break down their project into at least 3 main steps. For each step they need to determine their objective, how they will show they have mastered this objective, resources needed, teacher assistance required, and a time frame for completion.

Project Objective: Design and build your own 3D model of a building of your choosing or imagination.

Students may wish to recreate a dwelling, barn, or famous building OR create their dream home. Their building should be to scale and should be finished (windows, roof, shutters, steps, furniture, etc.). The outside of the building should include some surrounding features (e.g. bushes, trees, sidewalks, street, shed, etc.). The final project should incorporate the elements listed on the rubric and be as detailed as possible. Be creative!

Project Evaluation

Once the project is completed, students complete this "Show What You Know" Hyperdoc. This document asks for a screenshot of their Turtle Sandbox, a link to their Project Proposal, and a screenshot of their final project. The project will be graded based on the attached rubric.
