Rating

The Manhattan Prong tour is part of the New York Landscape Regions Collection of Google Earth Tours. This tour takes students to Central Park in New York City to see metamorphic rock, glacial features, differential weathering, and Cleopatra's Needle, an Egyptian obelisk brought to the city in 1881. They can also examine bedrock, float, mass wasting, jointing, and glacial polish in the Pound Ridge Reservation, and observe a metamorphic outcrop of Fordham Gneiss near Katonah, New York. The convergent boundary features of the Staten Island serpentine belt, formed during the Taconic Orogeny, can be viewed, and students can follow the Mianus River Gorge as it crosses the Cameron's Line fault. There is also a tour of the New York City water supply system with a lab activity to accompany it.

OER Student Advocate Toolkit
Unrestricted Use
CC BY
Rating
0.0 stars

This toolkit was created by OER student leaders in the CCC and CSU systems. The toolkit's purpose is to motivate students to get involved in OER advocacy and the Open Education movement, as well as make it known that students can make a difference in their education. Education costs can be cut to a fraction of the price with OER, which would allow for more students to be able to access knowledge and higher education. While this toolkit contains some examples and suggestions specific to California institutions, it can still be helpful for all college students. Thanks to the Michelson 20MM Foundation's financial support students were paid for their work and contributions in creating this document, as well as presenting at conferences.

Pathology Case Study: 36 Year Old Man with Nasopharyngeal Tumor

(This case study was added to OER Commons as one of a batch of over 700. It has relevant information which may include medical imagery, lab results, and history where relevant. A link to the final diagnosis can be found at the end of the case study for review. The first paragraph of the case study -- typically, but not always the clinical presentation -- is provided below.)

A 36-year-old man presented with a large nasal tumor following a long history of multiple meningiomas. At the age of 13, the patient underwent surgical resection and received a single course of radiation therapy for a left optic meningioma. He did well until age 33, when he was found to have multiple meningiomas in three new locations: falcine (Figure 1a), right petroclival and right anterior foramen magnum. These were surgically resected but no additional radiation was administered. Three years later, the patient presented with nasal symptoms, headaches, and seizures. Imaging studies revealed a large mass with intracranial and nasopharyngeal component measuring 4.1 x 5.4 x 6.8 cm in greatest dimensions and causing right frontal lobe compression (Figures 1b and 1c). A systemic workup, including PET CT, for other malignancies was unremarkable. A two-stage surgical resection was performed. The mass was initially biopsied by transsphenoidal endoscopic approach and then partially resected by bifrontal craniotomy, frontal sinus obliteration, en bloc ethmoidectomy, and nasal cavity resection.

Pathology Case Study: A 6 year old girl with left parietal lob tumor

A link to the final diagnosis can be found at the end of the case study for review. The first paragraph of the case study -- typically, but not always the clinical presentation -- is provided below.)

A 6 year old girl from Medellin, Colombia, South America, presented with twenty-five days of left-sided headache, vomiting, and episodes of syncope lasting roughly five seconds. The patient had no other medical history of significance. She had no café au lait spots, and no other tumors or masses in other body sites. Neurological examination revealed no focal deficits. An MRI scan showed a large intra-axial left parietal lobe mass with significant surrounding edema. The mass did not appear to originate from the dura; it did reach or breach the pia on the parietal convexity, and medially close to the falx. The falx was pushed by the mass effect of the tumor and was clearly separate from it. (Fig 1). A surgical excision was done in Colombia, and a tentative diagnosis made. The slides and selected blocks were sent to the University of Missouri for consultation. Since the time of surgery, the patient has been treated with radiation (thirty treatments) and has done extremely well. Neurologically she is almost completely normal, and her mother reports that the patient is asymptomatic and leading a normal life attending school.

The first paragraph of the case study -- typically, but not always the clinical presentation -- is provided below.)

A Caucasian male in his early 20's presented with a cutaneous, soft tissue mass of the right lower extremity as well as vascular abnormalities of the mid-3rd phalange. Subsequent pathologic fracture of the proximal 2nd phalange, led to the discovery of multiple osseous lesions of the left foot (below). Excision of the lesions showed similar histologic features in both the soft tissue and bone sites. Long-term follow up was characterized by multiple bone (tibia) and soft tissue recurrences within the tissues of the right lower limb.
