The relationship of animals and humans has been the subject of differing philosophical views for thousands of years. The controversy continues today in many aspects of contemporary life. Some people believe that a vegan lifestyle is the only moral choice. Others believe that humans should treat animals "humanely," but can use animals and animal products at will, including for biomedical or other scientific research. Others believe that humans have no moral responsibilities for animals and are free to treat animals as they want.
Advocates of animal rights believe that animals have legal rights and are members of the moral community. As such, animals should not be used by humans for any purpose. Advocates of animal welfare believe that non-human animals should be treated humanely and without unnecessary suffering, but otherwise are available for humans to use for food, clothing, research, and entertainment.

Annotations are short and cannot give detailed information, but they should cover these points:
1. The general contents of the work. What does it discuss and how detailed is it? This is the main portion of the annotation.
2. The author's qualifications. Is the writer a trained scholar? A journalist? Someone relating a personal experience?
3. An evaluation of the reliability. Is the information given reliable? Are facts or opinions stressed?
4. The intended audience. Is it for a general reader or a specialist? How much, if any, background knowledge is needed to understand it? Was is easy or difficult to read?

The Polar Rock Repository at the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center offers no-cost Rock Boxes for use by educators in both schools and informal learning environments, such as libraries, scout groups, and Science Olympiad teams. Each box may be borrowed for one month and contains more than 30 representative samples (rocks, minerals, fossils), printed materials for student use (books, descriptions, etc), teacher materials (also available online), and tools to examine the samples. With few exceptions, all of the samples in the boxes were brought back from Antarctica over the past century by U.S. expeditions!
A virtual version of the Rock Box may be viewed here. In addition to 3D models of rock samples, high resolution photographs and descriptions are linked.

Throughout this lesson, the students will learn how to correctly take measurements to create a fitted garment. Students will begin with brainstorming measuring tools. Next, they will discuss fabric sizing as a class. Students will learn about the history of measurements and why it is important to take measurements. Individuals will team up in pairs to practice taking measurement. Finally, students will apply the measurements by comparing and contrasting them with a home-sew pattern.  This lesson could be used before a student begins creating a garment for themselves, especially in Intro to Design or an Apparel Production & Construction course.

Applied Electrical Engineering Fundamentals
Unrestricted Use

This on-line textbook serves as an introduction to electrical engineering concepts and applications for non- electrical & computer engineering majors. This text was written to accompany the course ECE361 – Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. This is a required course for undergraduate mechanical, biomedical, and industrial engineering majors, and students from computer science, physics, art, and other academic majors have also taken the course.

The course provides students with vocabulary and electrical/electronics analysis and design concepts in order to help them work in multi-disciplined teams designing engineered systems in their professional careers. The course also provides a practical introduction to electronics that should enable students to experiment with electronics in their own right as well as provide a foundation for further study in electronics. The underlying pedagogical construct behind this book is based on this idea: in order to design, we need to understand the theory, from the big picture down to the details; we also need practice and confidence. This book introduces a set of electrical/electronics topics theoretically and provides the usual pencil and paper problems to practice the theory. This is followed by a series of hands-on experiments designing, building and testing circuits. These circuit experiments are designed to help students reinforce, make sense of, and gain confidence in their of learning of the theory. The experiments involve circuits that blink, beep, buzz, detect the environment, spin motors, steer tiny cars, run software and interface to the external world. Learning about and building things with electronics can be, and should be, enjoyable. This text, therefore, takes an approach that is intended to make learning about electrical engineering fundamentals fun.
