Painted Story Quilt (art + social studies; art + literature) Quilt-making spans …
Painted Story Quilt (art + social studies; art + literature) Quilt-making spans multiple centuries and many different cultures. It’s an art form that can teach basic math skills, record history, recycle cast-off materials and encourage cooperative efforts within a group...just to name a few ideas! Artist and author Faith Ringgold is renowned for her painted story quilts. She surrounds her narrative paintings with a quilted fabric border, creating visual art that tells a story in color, texture and pattern. In this lesson, students select a story to illustrate — a book they’ve read or a story of their own to share — then paint a scene on fabric pieces using watersoluble pastels and watercolor paint. The remaining fabric is painted with complimenting colors and patterns to make a border, and glued when dry to a piece of felt. Students are encouraged to share swatches with one another, just as fabrics have been created and shared in quiltmaking for centuries. As an option, students define key shapes with embroidery stitches and add beads. Grade Levels K-12 Note: instructions and materials based on a class of 25 students. Adjust as needed.

Paper Memory Quilt The practice of stitching together layers of padding and …
Paper Memory Quilt The practice of stitching together layers of padding and fabric may date back as far as ancient Egypt. In America, quilt-making was common beginning in the late eighteenth century. During this era, quilts were viewed as decorative items that displayed the fine needlework of the maker. Quilters often used fabrics recycled from old clothing, invoking memories of the past. A paper memory quilt is a fun way to preserve ephemera (paper items) that have personal significance for the creator. A beautiful paper quilt can be fashioned using special gift wraps, cards, candy wrappers, newspaper articles, ticket stubs, wallpaper or even old drawings! This project will teach important design skills as pieces of paper are cut apart and reassembled. Insight into pattern, rhythm and repetition is gained. Grade Levels 2-12 Note: Instructions and materials are based upon a class size of 25 students. Adjust them as needed.

Quilt Block Collage (art + history) Quilts, or the process of quilting …
Quilt Block Collage (art + history)
Quilts, or the process of quilting (sewing together layers of fabric and batting), date back to Ancient Egypt and China and continue to be a modern art form. They are used to tell stories, pass down family histories, celebrate weddings and births and as pieces of art to be hung on a wall and admired. What we think of as “quilts” today — small pieces of fabric sewn together to form blocks that collectively make a whole piece — did not become popular until the mid 19th century. Making quilt blocks was a means of “recycling” pieces of fabric from clothing that was no longer usable. In this lesson plan, students will have an opportunity to study quilts through history and make their own quilt block, using paper and glue rather than fabric and stitching. It’s a great way to recycle materials and illustrate a number of design principles — rhythm, pattern, balance and unity.
