"Nanotechnology has enabled numerous advances in communications, medicine, energy, and agriculture. But as the proliferation of nanomaterials ramps up, unintended consequences are becoming increasingly visible. A recent study examined the effects of silver nanoparticles on soils supporting the growth of maize. Findings revealed a 30% decrease in the relative abundance of members of the archaea community, which are important for nitrogen cycling in soil, vital for plant growth. Nanosilver also increased the abundance of certain possibly phytopathogenic fungi, possibly by eliminating bacteria that normally keep these harmful fungi in check. Finally, increased root growth seems unsustainable because it is probably caused by these stress factors, and not by beneficial effects. While this study was limited to relatively small, pot experiments, the findings suggest that the microbiome is an essential inclusion for studying the long-term effects of nanomaterials on the environment..."

"Underground plant-associated microbiomes – soil, root, and rhizosphere – are critical to plant health and growth. Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) are being identified and tested to increase crop productivity and improve sustainability. However, the bacteria introduced as PGPB usually do not persist in soils, despite improving plant growth. If PGPB are promoting plant growth without establishing in the environment or plant microbiome, how are they continuing to influence plant growth? To answer this question, a recent study examined the influence of PGPB treatment on pokeweed. The PGPB inocula in this study had little influence on the rhizosphere microbiome assembly and did not colonize the plant roots. Instead, the PGPB induced DNA methylation in the roots. Methylation is an epigenetic mechanism that influences which genes are expressed and is sometimes passed on to offspring..."

"For thousands of years, the Nile has provided bountiful gifts to the people who make their home around its banks, offering food, a means of transport, irrigation, and fertile soil. But there is a limit to how much the Nile can give. Already in the 1970s, Egypt began fully utilizing the available resources of the Nile. Any additional demand has been met virtually, through imports of food. Now, research suggests that within the next decade, Egypt is poised to import as much “virtual water” as it receives from the Nile. In a new study from MIT, researchers compiled water and crop data for Egypt spanning the past 60 years. That gave them one of the most detailed looks at modern water use ever produced for the country, and helped them understand Egypt’s trade in “virtual water”. Virtual water refers to the hidden flow of water in food and commodities. For example, it takes about 1100 tons of water to produce one ton of maize in Egypt..."

La rápida expansión de la frontera agrícola como consecuencia desmesurada de la deforestación y cambios antropogénicos a nivel mundial, es un tema de preocupación por la comunidad científica internacional. Además, frente a una lucha contra el cambio climático por efecto de la ganadería, una de las principales estrategias para la mitigación de gases de efecto invernadero, lo constituyen alternativas sostenibles si uso de productos con alta huella de carbono, revalorizando, además, los recursos locales. En el caso de la zona norte de Ecuador, a pesar de los limitados atributos respecto a gradiente de fertilidad de los suelos, la cría de ganado ya sea de leche y/o doble propósito representa uno de los eslabones más fuertes dentro de la economía de las familias. Por lo tanto, es menester investigar alternativas de producción que nos permitan conservar los recursos naturales dada la fragilidad de estos ecosistemas megadiversos. Mediante este libro se plasma que el uso de sistemas ganaderos convencionales, degradan los recursos naturales con mermas significativas de la productividad, así como bajo réditos económicos. En consecuencia, la implementación de sistemas silvopastoriles como alternativa tecnológica de fácil instalación, es sin duda el camino para alcanzar sistemas ganaderos más eficientes, amigables con el medio ambiente, diversificando además los ingresos económicos de la población.
