This presentation discusses how the political instability has an impact on health care services. It focuses upon a period in Uganda where the government health facilities were neglected resulting in the lack of adequate health care provision and access to medicines. Following the instability in the country, the development and management of its health care services was highly dependent on funding from external donors and significant international influence on national services, including health care programs.

The Ocean Health Index is a new, comprehensive measure of the ocean’s overall condition – one that treats people and nature as integrated parts of a healthy system. The ocean touches nearly every aspect of our lives – making it essential to the economic, social, and ecological well-being of everyone, everywhere. Evaluated globally and by country, the Ocean Health Index presents 10 public goals that represent the wide range of benefits that a healthy ocean provides to people. Each country’s overall score is the average of its 10 goal scores. Overall scores and individual goal scores are directly comparable between all countries. All scores range from 0 to 100.

According to a 2012 study, 81% of U.S. teenagers reported looking at online health information for their needs (Park & Kwon, 2018). For this reason, it is increasingly important to consider ways to promote and model effective digital health literacy. This module is designed not to dissuade adolescents from using digital resources to find health information, but rather equipping them with the tools to find reputable resources and responsibly use them to inform conversations with their health providers. This learning module is divided into three sub-modules (each 20-30 min in length) that are designed to be taught in separate sessions, or as part of a singular digital health literacy workshop/bootcamp. Please feel free to use any parts of this module that you feel could best empower your students to actively engage in their health and wellness.

SYNOPSIS: This lesson introduces the connections between air quality and environmental justice.

SCIENTIST NOTES: This lesson illustrates how air quality is related to cardiorespiratory health and how environmental injustice exacerbates these issues in marginalized communities. A well-sourced list of resources is provided where students can learn about human respiration, environmental justice, air quality in New Jersey, and what is being done to address environmental injustice by both the state and the New Jersey Environmental Justice Alliance. Students are tasked with reviewing these sources and then sharing what they learned in a fishbowl discussion. This lesson is recommended for teaching.

POSITIVES:
-This lesson utilizes student choice, active listening, and active participation.
-Students are guided through a Fishbowl discussion which facilitates respectful listening and exchanging of opinions.

ADDITIONAL PREREQUISITES:
-Teachers should feel comfortable offering choice, allowing students independence and autonomy in their learning. This lesson encourages open conversation and monitoring regarding student held discussions.
-This resource is helpful for facilitating a Fishbowl discussion.
-Students will need access to the Teacher Slideshow in order to conduct their independent work.

DIFFERENTIATION:
-Students are able to work at their own pace and order for the playlist activity, but teachers can scaffold certain steps for students who need additional support.
-Teachers can create a sample guide for the independent playlist activity.
-Teachers can embed the necessary adjustments into the playlist and check boxes for students with special needs or considerations.
-Teachers can add a sixth check box that includes a chat with the teacher so that questions and checks for understanding can be incorporated.

The "digital learning object" is designed to provide employees with knowledge of warehouse safety and health regulations.  It is essential to know the dangers in the work environment every time the employee clocks into work and be aware of what they can do to make the job areas safer for themselves and coworkers. The safety of workers is the most binding obligation that any warehouse — or business, for that matter — can offer. Workers have a right to a safe working environment.

Included are two modules for COM 346: Health Communication that employ principles of culturally responsive education, universal design and open pedagogy.

Module one: “Academic citizenship: Health Communication” details a three-part learning opportunity to be spread out over the duration of the course. The idea here is to flatten the distance between instructor and learner and support student ownership of the learning experience.

Module two: “Final reflection: Health Communication” promotes reflection through a flexible invitation that offers learners traditional and artistic opportunities to share their “golden nugget” take-away points from our learning experience.
