These resources are for enabling children to think critically about health claims and make well-informed choices. They include a combined comic and text book, an exercise book, and a teachers' guide. The resources have been tested in an experiment with over 10,000 children, which showed they improve children's ability to assess health claims. They have been translated to 12 languages. I use this (fictional) transcript of an initial client interview to get students thinking and talking about the component parts of an initial client interview and how an initial client interview might best be structured. I ask students to read the transcript before class and make an outline of what the interviewer is doing at different points in the interview. In class, I recruit students to read multiple parts of the transcript out loud, with breaks in the action to discuss what the interviewer is doing and how it might be done differently. The interview focuses on disability-based housing discrimination but no prior knowledge of disability or Disability Rights Law is needed for students to understand what's going on.

While the ionic composition of surface seawater is basically the same anywhere in the world's oceans, the chemistry of inland waters can vary by orders of magnitude over short distances. In this activity we explore a data set on surface water chemistry in almost 5000 lakes across the Nordic countries (Norway, Sweden, Finland). Water chemistry of lakes in this mostly sparsely populated region does not carry a strong signal from local human activity. This allows us to explore large-scale gradients related to distance to the ocean, soil and landscape characteristics, post-glacial history, and effects of long-distance pollutant transport processes.

This project was designed to have students read as story and evaluate and analyze the entire book to answer one driving question. Students will work on determining what makes a good friend and what characteristics they tend to look for in a friend. There are mini activities to get the student's minds thinking instead of just having them get right into the assignment. Inquiry projects force students to analyze and think about the work they're completing.

This sequence of seven assignments, dubbed “Research Arc,” was created over a decade of teaching introductory research writing to students of all majors at University of Oregon. My primary goals in developing this sequence were to build a culturally responsive and collaborative learning environment and model a thoughtful and conscientious research process that prevents common research pitfalls like de-contextualization of sources, sloppy documentation, and confirmation bias.
My first step was creating an open and unifying course theme, which I title “Making a Better World Through Research and Writing.” This theme acts as an “umbrella” for the course by covering many ideas and questions intersecting through decades and across disciplines. Under this umbrella, students are empowered to research issues that are meaningful to them, personally and academically, while still fostering stimulating connections between their diverse range of research projects. This umbrella theme evolves with current events and between sections of the course, such as via sharing an inspirational list of previous research topics with which former students have been especially successful.

Students in our online, introductory geoscience courses are given the opportunity to participate in an environmental service learning project, led by the Center for Earth and Environmental Science (cees.iupui.edu), and reflect on the local and global impact of their service in a short writing assignment. The goals of the optional service learning participation are to (1) provide hands-on field experiences to students in online classes, (2) allow opportunities to connect course concepts to real-life environmental issues, and (3) increase students' environmental awareness, and (4) apply an understanding of sustainability to participation in environmental restoration projects. As part of a larger study with CEES, students complete a pre- and post-environmental awareness survey.
