"Molecular signaling pathways are crucial for cellular function and communication. In order to work properly, the pathways must be sensitive, adaptable, and tunable to specific stimuli and situations. These essential qualities are made possible by intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs). IDPs can’t fold into stable, defined structures on their own, but many IDPs can gain at least some structure when they bind with specific partners. These and other interactions change the IDPs’ conformations to enable specific and reversible binding, giving the signaling pathways the sensitivity and flexibility they need to function correctly. Algorithms and other computational tools can help identify IDPs and predict their functions. So far, such tools have revealed that IDPs are pervasive in all kingdoms of life. In addition, they’ve shown that IDPs help relay signals from diverse stimuli, such as ions, lipids, proteins, chemicals, and environmental cues in every category of cell signaling pathway and at every step..."

Analysis I (18.100) in its various versions covers fundamentals of mathematical analysis: continuity, differentiability, some form of the Riemann integral, sequences and series of numbers and functions, uniform convergence with applications to interchange of limit operations, some point-set topology, including some work in Euclidean n-space.
MIT students may choose to take one of three versions of 18.100: Option A (18.100A) chooses less abstract definitions and proofs, and gives applications where possible. Option B (18.100B) is more demanding and for students with more mathematical maturity; it places more emphasis from the beginning on point-set topology and n-space, whereas Option A is concerned primarily with analysis on the real line, saving for the last weeks work in 2-space (the plane) and its point-set topology. Option C (18.100C) is a 15-unit variant of Option B, with further instruction and practice in written and oral communication.

This course is offered to undergraduates and introduces students to the formulation, methodology, and techniques for numerical solution of engineering problems. Topics covered include: fundamental principles of digital computing and the implications for algorithm accuracy and stability, error propagation and stability, the solution of systems of linear equations, including direct and iterative techniques, roots of equations and systems of equations, numerical interpolation, differentiation and integration, fundamentals of finite-difference solutions to ordinary differential equations, and error and convergence analysis. The subject is taught the first half of the term.
This subject was originally offered in Course 13 (Department of Ocean Engineering) as 13.002J. In 2005, ocean engineering became part of Course 2 (Department of Mechanical Engineering), and this subject was renumbered 2.993J.

"The expression of human genes is partially modulated by epigenetic mechanisms. There is a dramatic epigenetic transformation during transition of embryonic stem cells (ESCs) to specialized cells and the reprogramming of somatic cells to become induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). Aberrant epigenetic changes can contribute to carcinogenesis and other disorders. The histone demethylase Jumonji domain-containing protein-3 (JMJD3) regulates the trimethylation of histone H3 on lysine 27 (H3K27me3), which is an important epigenetic event associated with transcriptional silencing. JMJD3 function has been studied in relation to immune diseases, cancer, and tumor development. Recent studies have suggested that JMJD3 also plays a major role in cell fate determination of pluripotent and multipotent stem cells. JMJD3 specifically enhances self-renewal ability and reduces the differentiation capacity of ESCs and multipotent stem cells..."

This course is an introduction to numerical methods: interpolation, differentiation, integration, and systems of linear equations. It covers the solution of differential equations by numerical integration, as well as partial differential equations of inviscid hydrodynamics: finite difference methods, boundary integral equation panel methods. Also addressed are introductory numerical lifting surface computations, fast Fourier transforms, the numerical representation of deterministic and random sea waves, as well as integral boundary layer equations and numerical solutions.
This course was originally offered in Course 13 (Department of Ocean Engineering) as 13.024. In 2005, ocean engineering subjects became part of Course 2 (Department of Mechanical Engineering), and this course was renumbered 2.29.

"Plakin proteins are a family of large cytoskeletal proteins whose primary role is maintaining cytoskeletal integrity, but they are also essential in maintaining the network between cytoskeleton, plasma membrane, and intracellular organelles. Many cancers show increased plakin expression in tumors compared to normal tissue. In fact, in colon and breast cancer, plakins are directly involved in metastatic processes, but they are chronically under-studied in cancer, despite playing such an important role. A recent review explored the roles they play in disease-states, particularly cancers, with an emphasis on ovarian cancer. Ovarian cancer patients are typically not diagnosed until late-stage disease, but plakin proteins show promise as an early-stage biomarker. The current body of research shows crucial plakin expression changes in ovarian cancer progression and recurrence. For example, changes in plakin expression may drive the transition from benign ovarian tumors to carcinomas..."

Adult education classrooms are commonly comprised of learners who have widely disparate levels of mathematical problem-solving skills. This is true regardless of what level a student may be assessed at when entering an adult education program or what level class they are placed in. Providing students with differentiated instruction in the form of Push and Support cards is one way to level this imbalance, keeping all students engaged in one high-cognitive task that supports and encourages learners who are stuck, while at the same time, providing extensions for students who move through the initial phase of the task quickly. Thus, all
students are continually moving forward during the activity, and when the task ends, all students have made progress in their journey towards developing conceptual understanding of mathematical ideas along with a productive disposition, belief in one’s own ability to successfully engage with mathematics.

"Stem cells are a promising source for regenerating damaged tissue and treating disease, but finding a safe, reliable, effective source of stem cells is a major challenge. Stem cells derived from discarded placenta present fewer ethical, legal, and technical challenges than embryonic and mesenchymal stem cells, making them of particular interest in the development of stem cell-based treatments. A recent study examined the development of human amniotic epithelial cells (hAECs), a placental stem cell type that is able to differentiate into cells from all germ layers. Researchers analyzed the ability of a natural compound - 3,4,5-Tri-O-Caffeoylquinic Acid (TCQA) – to induce hAEC differentiation in vitro. They found that TCQA treatment enriched pigment and neural cell gene expression along with genes linked to neurogenesis, oxidation-reduction, epidermal development, and metabolism..."

This course teaches the art of guessing results and solving problems without doing a proof or an exact calculation. Techniques include extreme-cases reasoning, dimensional analysis, successive approximation, discretization, generalization, and pictorial analysis. Applications include mental calculation, solid geometry, musical intervals, logarithms, integration, infinite series, solitaire, and differential equations. (No epsilons or deltas are harmed by taking this course.) This course is offered during the Independent Activities Period (IAP), which is a special 4-week term at MIT that runs from the first week of January until the end of the month.

T cells are long lived and are involved in cell mediated immunity. Functionally they are divided by the expression of CD4+ or CD8+ markers. CD4+ T helper cells recognise antigens bound to MHC II complexes and are involved with the control of intracellular and extracellular pathogens; they can interact with CD8+, NK and dendritic cells or with B cells. Cytotoxic CD8+ T cells recognise the MHC I complex and destroy infected or neoplastic cells.
