In response to school closures due to COVID-19, OSPI content experts have curated a selection of links to external organizations providing high-quality online educational materials – courses, lessons, videos, physical and outdoor activity suggestions, etc. Please note that in many cases, these resources are free to use online but are not openly licensed for wide scale reuse and adaptation.
This document provides some learning resources associated with each of the K-2 Washington Science Content Learning Standards. They are intended to serve during this “stay at home” time, which includes all Washington schools. They are not intended to replace or be equivalent to face-to-face learning. Please feel free to use the resources or to make adaptations
We’re excited to announce a partnership between the public television stations across Washington and OSPI. Your local public television station is helping support educators, parents and caregivers with a variety of free high-quality, accessible educational media resources. The PBS KIDS 24/7 channel and PBD KIDS programming on the main channel (for young learners ages 2-8) and the WORLD channel At-Home Learning Service (for learners grades 6-12) feature broadcast programming linked to at-home learning resources that can be used by educators to supplement distance learning plans, or by parents to provide added enrichment and support for children’s educational needs. With both channels available free over the air, these educational programs can reach families who do not have internet access or computers at home.
The PBS Learning Media Teacher Planning Kits for New School Routines are eight-week planning kits filled with lesson ideas, activities and professional learning support.
While food waste is not typically seen as contributing to greenhouse gas emissions, it is a major contributor. Reducing food waste ranks as the 3rd most beneficial drawdown solution. Wasted food, and the resources to produce that food, are responsible for approximately 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions. When individuals and groups reduce food waste, it has a huge impact on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Food waste awareness is applicable to every person and community. In this storyline, students connect with cultural values around food, impacts of food waste and solutions to food waste issues.

Development is sequential, with skills building on prior knowledge and learning. Young students pass through many key milestones on their way toward end-of-year standards. These progressions in literacy and numeracy show how learning unfolds across multiple grade levels allows teachers to identify what knowledge and abilities students possess at the start of the year and what comes next, so they can meet each student where they are and address any gaps that may exist.
The activities in this weekly reading routine from Student Achievement Partners (Achieve the Core website) are designed to support growth in all three areas of reading fluency (accuracy, rate, and expression). Detailed guidance is given on how to implement the routine during in-person (or virtual synchronous learning), virtual asynchronous learning, or limited access/technology situations.
Free reading options for all Pre K - 12 students. Sites include access for English learners as well as students with reading barriers. Opportunities are highlighted for online reading, downloadable eBooks, audiobooks, apps to read content on smartphones/tablets, and read aloud stories for our youngest learners.

Teaching Strategies is also developing free resources through Ready Rosie™ that will include interviews with experts on how families can stay healthy and safe, how to support children’s emotional well-being during the pandemic, and some fun activities families can do at home that support learning and overall well-being. More information on these resources will be shared with you this week.
We would like to remind you of the Resources Library located within the Family area of the online platform, GOLD®. If you have added your student's family members and their emails to the online platform (if not see instructions below), you will be able to directly email families those activities that are based on the areas of development for your students. These activities are intended to be shared and are therefore, family friendly. Take some time to explore the Family area in GOLD® and consider using these lessons as a way to support your remote learning plan.
Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction created WaKIDS resources to support kindergarten families and teachers with remote learning including the Goal Planning and Reflection Sheet, Choice Boards, and Discussion Prompts, Look Fors, and Observational Activities. Kindergarten children are not yet able to manage their learning independently, so it will be important to establish goals together with the key adults who will help them engage in remote learning. The Goal Planning and Reflection Sheet is intended be co-created with the child, their parent/guardian and teacher during meeting times. The other resources assist families and teachers to identify learning activities that offer opportunities for observation and assessment of skills, knowledge, and behavior.
Developed in partnership with the Jamerson Center for Engineering and Mathematics and ESD112 STEM Initiatives, this unit explores NGSS Performance Expectations for Kindergarten Weather and Climate, including an engineering design performance task.
