The teaching ideas on this page have been found, refined, and developed by students in a college-level course on the teaching of biology at the elementary level. Unless otherwise noted, the lesson plans have been tried at least once by students from our partner schools. Students learn how nanoparticles can be creatively used for medical diagnostic purposes. They learn about buckminsterfullerenes, more commonly known as buckyballs, and about the potential for these complex carbon molecules to deliver drugs and other treatments into the human body. They brainstorm methods to track buckyballs in the body, then build a buckyball from pipe cleaners with a fluorescent tag to model how nanoparticles might be labeled and detected for use in a living organism. As an extension, students research and select appropriate radioisotopes for different medical applications.

FACES is a partnership between Oakland and Berkeley public schools and Children's Hospital Oakland. The program helps prepare at-risk kids for entry into college and the health professions through a multitude of services based at the hospital. FACES has already changed the lives of many young people who live in one of the most violent communities in America.

"Mouse Squad" is a group of 4th to 8th graders who support their school's technology needs. These kids maintain and service their school's computers, gain technical skills, and learn lessons about professionalism and working together. Rounding things out with field trips to nearby Silicon Valley, there's no question that "geeks are the new cool."

The Spanish Language Immersion School is a public school with dedicated educators and committed parents who are creating an extraordinary experience for kids from K to Grade 5. Students arrive speaking English as their dominant language. They leave fluent in Spanish, but also filled with knowledge about various cultures, practiced in diversity, and possessing real skills that give them an educational and career advantage.

Children experiment with freezing water to observe a state change of water, and discover that it is less dense as a solid (ice) than it is as a liquid (water). Amazing Expanding Ice is an overnight activity requiring 20 minutes of preparation, overnight freezing of the experiment, and 10 minutes of follow-up discussion.

This K-2nd grade lesson will allow students to investigate the three types of honey bees in a colony, identify their roles, and recognize honey bees as part of a community that works together. The lesson includes three activities, vocabulary words, recommended reading, and a "making honey" lab! 

Students will learn how to perform basic skills using a Garmin GPS unit; mark waypoints, navigate to a waypoint, use the compass and 'go to' functions to estimate distance to a pre-programmed point, change GPS data to find hidden locations. Students will work in teams and help each other as they learn new GPS skills and gain a working understanding of georeferenced data, using clues and team work to solve problems, and how objects are oriented in space.

This course will provide an overview of a new vision for Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) in which people are surrounded by intelligent and intuitive interfaces embedded in the everyday objects around them. It will focus on understanding enabling technologies and studying applications and experiments, and, to a lesser extent, it will address the socio-cultural impact. Students will read and discuss the most relevant articles in related areas: smart environments, smart networked objects, augmented and mixed realities, ubiquitous computing, pervasive computing, tangible computing, intelligent interfaces and wearable computing. Finally, they will be asked to come up with new ideas and start innovative projects in this area.

Students learn the stories of two ambitious and courageous women artists in European history -- Luisa Roldan (also known as La Roldana) and Elisabeth Louise Vigee Le Brun -- and examine works by both. Students then research and write a short report on a female artist working today.
