A case-study approach can be used to introduce students to the work that geologists do as environmental consultants. Data used by environmental consultants for a Brownfield site that is currently undergoing redevelopment in St. Paul, MN has been adapted for in-class study, either as a series of short exercises, or as part of a larger project.

This project will allow students to grow, develop, and apply the quadratic equation.  They will be able to explain through a table, graphing and solving different quadratic equations.  They will be able to tell what the two zero in a quadratic equations means and solving the problems using elimination, graphing and substitution.

This is a really fun and informative lesson that I do with my high school Programming/technology class to break up the monotony of beginner programming. However; this lesson can be used and applied in essentially any class and for many purposes, and to address many areas. One of the other really nice things about this lesson is that it can be extended to hit many points including physics, math, and advanced engineering.

Throughout the building period, I would present teams with a challenge (puzzle, build, etc…) and the first team to complete it would get a prize. It could be more modification time, extra materials, etc…)

The materials (including hot glue guns) can be purchased at Wal Mart or a similar store for around $20-25, if ordering through your district isn’t an option. With those purchases, it gives you a lot more materials than needed which can be used for additional similar projects.

Students are introduced to the "Walk the Line" challenge question. They write journal responses to the question and brainstorm what information they need to answer the question. Ideas are shared with the class (or in pairs and then to the class, if class size is large). Then students read an interview with an engineer to gain a professional perspective on linear data sets and best-fit lines. Students brainstorm for additional ideas and add them to the list. With the teacher's guidance, students organize the ideas into logical categories of needed knowledge.

This lesson centers around the How AI Works: Chatbots and Large Language Models video from the How AI Works video series. Watch this video first before exploring the lesson plan.

Large Language Models (LLMs) generate new text. The text LLMs generate looks like a human might have written it because large language models are built based on large bodies of text, such as Wikipedia. In this lesson, students learn what an LLM is and how it works, then use an LLM to co-create a text with AI. Finally, the class wraps up with a discussion about whether or not LLMs are intelligent or creative.

This lesson can be taught on its own, or as part of a 7-lesson sequence on How AI Works. Duration: 45 minutes
