Student teams design and conduct quality-control experiments to test the reliability of several ultraviolet protection factors. Students use UV-detecting beads in their experimental designs to test the effectiveness of various types of sunscreens and sunblock. For example, they might examine zinc oxide nanoparticles versus traditional organic sun protection factors. UV intensity is quantitatively measured by UVA and UVB Vernier sensors, and students record and graph their results. This “How To….” Manual is intended to assist the new user in implementing standard statistical methods, both parametric and non-parametric, using R statistical software. Its focus is on R implementation, not statistical theory. It includes the R commands, with examples, for the following: proportion tests, t-tests, ANOVA, variance tests, several correlation measures and regression models, Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon tests, Kruskal-Wallis tests, chi-squared tests, multiple pairwise comparisons and effect sizes. Basic graphical methods are also illustrated.

In this video, we take a slightly different approach to determining comparative advantage because we are given data in a slightly different way. Rather than knowing how much of two goods can be produced in a day, we know how much of a resources (in this case labor) is needed to produce one unit of a good.

In this video, we use the PPCs for two different countries that each produce two goods in order to create an output table based on the data in the graph. We then use the output table to determine the opportunity costs of producing each good. Finally, we determine which country has a comparative advantage in each good.

Topics will include a brief survey of field evidence of rock deformation, physics of plastic deformation in minerals, brittle fracture and sliding, and pressure-solution processes. Qualitative research has long suffered from a lack of free tools for analysis, leaving no options for researchers without significant funds for software licenses. This presents significant challenges for equity. This panel discussion will explore the first two free/libre open source qualitative analysis tools out there: qcoder (R package) and Taguette (desktop application). Drawing from the diverse backgrounds of the presenters (social science, library & information science, software engineering), we will discuss what openness and extensibility means for qualitative research, and how the two tools we've built facilitate equitable, open sharing.

Students will be introduced to the 4 basic functions that computers perform and begin to think about the advantages that computers have over humans in taking in input, processing data, and providing output. Students will be asked to identify how humans interface with computers using input and output devices and then invent a new input/output prototype of their choosing.

Broadly speaking, Machine Learning refers to the automated identification of patterns in data. As such it has been a fertile ground for new statistical and algorithmic developments. The purpose of this course is to provide a mathematically rigorous introduction to these developments with emphasis on methods and their analysis.
