SYNOPSIS: In this lesson, students investigate how artists use their platforms to spread awareness about climate change.

SCIENTIST NOTES: This lesson encourages students to think about how artists and their art can be used to teach and inspire others about climate change. Many videos are included in the slideshow. Videos include one of Sarah Lewis, an art historian discussing how one person’s artwork can shift things, and a second one featuring “Earthrise,” a poem by Amanda Gorman, the youngest inaugural poet in U.S. history. There are an additional six videos covering artists and their artwork about climate change. This lesson finishes with great reflection questions and an opportunity for class discussion. This would be a great lesson for teaching the effects of art on the public perception of climate change.

POSITIVES:
-Students consider the role of art as a form of climate activism.
-Students are exposed to a variety of artists and types of art addressing climate change.
-This lesson has significant cross-curricular possibilities, even though it focuses on art and artists.
-Students begin to think about ways they might use artwork as a means of taking climate action.

ADDITIONAL PREREQUISITES:
-This is lesson 1 of 3 in our 9th-12th grade Climate Heroes unit.
-This lesson should follow a basic introduction to climate change science, exploration of global and local impacts, and climate change solutions.
-Some prior knowledge of contemporary art practices is useful, but not required.

DIFFERENTIATION:
-Teachers can provide instruction multimodally.
-Teachers can modify the assignment and assessment as needed.
-Teachers can follow up with questions to ensure comprehension.
-Teachers can pair students with helpful peers.

Nachhaltige Digitalisierung ist eine Digitalisierung, die sich einbettet in die Werte und Normen der Gesellschaft sowie die planetaren Grenzen beachtet. Um zur Umsetzung von nachhaltiger Digitalisierung beizutragen, hat die Volkshochschule Bonn im Rahmen der Learning City Bonn ein modular aufgebautes Weiterbildungsangebot für die DozentInnen entwickelt und stellt es Volkshochschulen und anderen Einrichtungen der Weiterbildung zur Verfügung. abei ist die Kernfrage: Wie können Dozent*innen unterstützt werden, Aspekte einer nachhaltigen Digitalisierung zu beachten und zu vermitteln? Wir verstehen dabei nachhaltige Digitalisierung als Querschnittsthema, das mit unterschiedlichen Schwerpunkten je nach Kurs und Format zur Anwendung kommen kann. Dozent*innen werden sowohl als Weiterbildungsakteure sowie als Multiplikator*innen angesprochen. Als Themenfelder nachhaltiger Digitalisierung wurden erarbeitet: Teilhabe, Klima- und Ressourcenschutz, Privatheit, Selbstbestimmung und Wohlbefinden.

Die Praxisboxen umfassen (für den Anfang) folgende Module:
- Ökologischer Rucksack des Smartphones“
- „Always on? Klimasensibel lehren“
- „Digital inklusiv – Vielfalt online ermöglichen“
- „Downsizing“
- „Sharing is caring“
- „Gemeinsam Spaß statt Social Distancing“

Die Praxisboxen sind nach einer jeweils gleichen Systematik aufgebaut, die sich auf Lehr-Lernsituation sowie die Herausforderung der nachhaltigen Digitalisierung bezieht. Sie stellen praxisorientiert Handlungsmöglichkeiten, Tipps sowie Impulse zur Übertragung des Themas auf eigene Kontexte dar. Hinweise zum Weiterlesen werden gegeben. Die Praxisboxen können nach Bedarf ausgewählt werden.

Our group questioned the actions and behaviors taken by communities and individuals to participate in solving the environmental issues of life on land, life below water, water and sanitation, and climate action. We did this through personal observations and collection of data monitored by photographs within the different environments and communities, both the city and outside the city.

This artist book is an extension of the The Art for Science Mural project, located in Columbia, Missouri and funded by the 2018 Art for Science Rising initiative of the Union of Concerned Scientists. The book consists of a recreation of the mural design in coloring book format, and a workbook which can be used to create an asset map of a given locale’s sustainable resources so that readers can make conscious choices about how they use the assets within a given community. It is meant to be an educational and information gathering tool that is open source (with a copyleft license) and where the collection of this information is decentralized.

The McLuhan quote suggests we must all do the work, and be responsible, in the care for our one and only home. One way that this work can be done is collating and sharing information about the available sustainable resources in a given area.
