Fundamentals of Infrastructure Management

This book grew out of a decade of co-teaching a course entitled ‘Infrastructure Management’ at Carnegie Mellon University. Our teaching philosophy was to prepare students for work in the field of infrastructure management. We believe that infrastructure management is a professional endeavor and an attractive professional career. The book is co-authored by two accomplished engineers - each representing professional practice, academic research and theoretical evaluation. Their collective strengths are presented throughout the text and serve to support both the practice of infrastructure management and a role for infrastructure management inquiry and search. Importantly, both co-authors have academic research interests (and a number of research publications) on various topics of infrastructure management. That said, the primary audience for this book is expected to be professionals intending to practice infrastructure management, and only secondarily individuals who intend to pursue a career of research in the area.

How does nitrogen pollution impact coral and their resident microbes?

This resource is a video abstract of a research paper created by Research Square on behalf of its authors. It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:

"Coral reefs are important ocean ecosystems. However, they have been declining in recent years due to human activities, including elevated nitrate in the water. Corals maintain complex relationships with numerous microbes, including the dinoflagellate algae Symbiodiniaceae and bacteria. To better understand the impact of nitrate on coral and their resident microbes, researchers recently examined coral and microbial gene expression changes in larval Pocillopora damicornis. Under elevated nitrate conditions, the Symbiodiniaceae algae generally hoarded more nutrients for its own growth. Normally Symbiodiniaceae share nutrients with the coral, so this was a shift from a mutualistic relationship to a parasitic one, which led to impaired development in the larval coral. However, the prokaryotic microbes might reduce this negative interaction by restraining Symbiodiniaceae growth, which partially restores coral larval development..."

Just keep silent: Repeated structural reform could prevent employees from speaking up

It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:

"Employees can be a fountain of idesas on how an organization is run. Yet sometimes, they might feel compelled to keep quiet, fearing conflict or controversy. This so-called “defensive silence” can damage both performance and employee morale. While the source of this fear can vary, new research links defensive silence to repeated structural reform within an organization. Among the most devastating examples of employee silence is the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster of 2003. The cause—a flying piece of insulating foam on takeoff— was long known to NASA engineers as a possible risk. But to avoid disputes, they withheld their concerns from management, who assumed that mission safety was ensured. Research on the origins of defensive silence is still emerging. There is, however, reason to believe that structural reforms could play a role. These shifts in organizational boundaries, tasks, or position can help public organizations adapt to a dynamic environment..."
