Rating
0.0 stars

This book on Cybersecurity is written for beginners. No college degree is required. Cybersecurity covers a broad spectrum of topics. This book intends to ease the initial learning curve using associable analogies in normal life and graphical and guided exercises. Completing the Cybersecurity study in this book can be accomplished in a self-paced learning manner outside of a classroom.

It is hoped that self-paced learning and/or the teaching of this book at various institutions will open the doors to a broader audience in their career development towards the job-rich cybersecurity industry. Further, it is hoped that by demystifying cybersecurity, people will build up their interests and confidence in transitioning into the cybersecurity industries from whatever field they are working in today.

Getting specific: A new strain-specific workflow for monitoring pneumococcal bacterial carriage

This resource is a video abstract of a research paper created by Research Square on behalf of its authors. It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:

"Pneumococcal bacteria (Streptococcus pneumoniae) can cause several different serious infections including pneumonia, sinusitis, and meningitis. Studies to monitor the levels of pneumococcal bacteria ‘carried’ by individuals are called carriage studies and are used to inform vaccination programs. But most carriage study techniques distinguish between pneumococcal subtypes based on their outside structure, or serotype, rather than by genetic strain. Consequently, little is known about strain-specific carriage and interactions between strains. To close this gap, researchers trialed a new workflow using single-molecule real-time (SMRT) sequencing of the genetic marker plyNCR. Tests using mock bacterial communities found that this workflow was sensitive and highly specific to S. pneumoniae. Banked nasal swabs collected from infants during their first year of life were used for a real-world test..."

The rest of the transcript, along with a link to the research itself, is available on the resource itself.

The course seeks to familiarize the learners with the possibilities involved in the management of diabetes and hypertension. This course is to make medical knowledge simpler and accessible for common people. This will help reduce anxiety about the diseases. Reduction in the incidence of threatening complications like cerebral stroke, heart attack, kidney failure, blindness,  diabetic foot and amputations is the goal we need to achieve. The health-aware person, a learner of this course, can be a patient itself, a relative, a neighbor, or anyone from society. Some basic education and a will to help the patient is all that is required.

This course introduces theoretical and practical principles of design of oceanographic sensor systems. Topics include: transducer characteristics for acoustic, current, temperature, pressure, electric, magnetic, gravity, salinity, velocity, heat flow, and optical devices; limitations on these devices imposed by ocean environments; signal conditioning and recording; noise, sensitivity, and sampling limitations; and standards. Lectures by experts cover the principles of state-of-the-art systems being used in physical oceanography, geophysics, submersibles, acoustics. For lab work, day cruises in local waters allow students to prepare, deploy and analyze observations from standard oceanographic instruments.

Monitoring of the epidemiological patterns (animal, place, time) of diseases and pathogens within populations provides a vital system for the identification of changes in disease status within this population (whether this relates to all animals worldwide, or those within a single country, region, village or farm). For this reason, most countries have systems in place for the intermittent collection and collation of data relating to disease. Monitoring of production levels also provides a method of informing farmers about the productivity of their animals. These processes can be described as monitoring systems.

Students apply their knowledge of scale and geometry to design wearables that would help people in their daily lives, perhaps for medical reasons or convenience. Like engineers, student teams follow the steps of the design process, to research the wearable technology field (watching online videos and conducting online research), brainstorm a need that supports some aspect of human life, imagine their own unique designs, and then sketch prototypes (using Paint®). They compare the drawn prototype size to its intended real-life, manufactured size, determining estimated length and width dimensions, determining the scale factor, and the resulting difference in areas. After considering real-world safety concerns relevant to wearables (news article) and getting preliminary user feedback (peer critique), they adjust their drawn designs for improvement. To conclude, they recap their work in short class presentations.
