This second lesson enables students to apply what they know about human reproduction via PIV sex (Lesson 1 of this series) to other means of reproduction. They will not only learn the steps in how insemination and IVF work to create a pregnancy, but they will also learn that people other than parents can provide the genetic material (eggs, sperm, and embryos) and give birth to a child for someone else (surrogates). Students will be working in small groups to help one another understand the concepts and to practice using the inclusive language that the educator modeled in the first lesson.

Students will learn about respecting the gender identities, gender expressions, and sexual orientations of themselves and others through scenarios. Student groups will interpret and present the scenarios to the class.

In this series of lessons students explore the concepts of gender and gender expression through the use of mentor texts. Over the course of five sessions, you will read five texts and complete a process grid highlighting key components of each text. Students then create an illustration of how to demonstrate care for people across the gender spectrum.

Students will explore the concept of gender expression through a sorting activity. Students will discuss showing respect for others.

This lesson details the basics of healthy relationships: what they are and how to recognize them. It also covers consent, boundaries, power dynamics, red flags, and characteristics of different kinds of relationships. Students will engage in discussions and activities in which they will identify characteristics and assess the health of relationships in brief scenarios.

Students will be introduced to the reproductive system and the following body parts: penis, testicles, scrotum, ovary, uterus, vulva, clitoris, vagina, bladder, urethra, and anus. Students will get a basic understanding of anatomical orientation, basic function, and variation of these body parts. Students will discuss such topics as safe space, safe adults, and diverse bodies.

The lesson provides a refresher on basic anatomy, as well as the processes of ovulation, menstruation, and pregnancy. It goes through the stages of pregnancy, and the pregnancy options available to Oregon residents. The lesson ends with a Jeopardy-style lesson recap.

The lesson presents a definition of sex and asserts consent is a key aspect of healthy sexual experiences. Students will define the various parts of consent and review Oregon’s laws regarding consent, sex, and minors. They will investigate what influences their decisions about sex, and will then follow a fictional couple through various decision-making processes around deciding to or not to have sex, the use of birth control, pregnancy options, and decisions around parenting. Students will also research local reproductive and sexual health clinics.

This lesson explains and differentiates between sex assigned at birth, gender identity, and sexual orientation. There is also a discussion of why personal pronouns matter. It emphasizes the importance of respecting everyone regardless of their differences and walks students through ways to interrupt bullying.

This lesson provides a very basic overview of common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and the best ways to prevent their spread. STIs are extremely common (1 in 2 people will be exposed to one by the time they’re 25), so this lesson reinforces the importance of prevention, testing, and treatment.

This is the second half of a basic introduction to sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This lesson focuses on prevention, the proper way to use condoms and other barrier methods, what to expect when getting tested for STIs, and how to talk to sexual partners about STI prevention.

This lesson introduces the topic of sexuality education, allows students to set ground rules for the upcoming lessons, gives them the opportunity to suggest topics they would like to learn about, introduces an anonymous question box, and explains why sex ed is important even if they aren’t sexually active.

This lesson is an introductory lesson to screenprinting and how screen printing is used for social activism. Further study of the historical background that shaped these screenprints (in the extensions section at the end of the lesson) includes topics relevant to Mexican American communities and raises awareness about important historical events in Mexican-American history in the United States. The main focus of this unit is to learn about the background and history of Mexican Americans through studying these and other Chicanx artist screen prints.

 This lesson is designed for a 90-minute period at the high school level for a dual language Heritage or Spanish Language Arts class. However, it could easily be divided into sections or modified for middle school students or advanced Spanish world language students. In this lesson, students explore how identity is formed through various life influences and analyze the cause/effect relationship between their personal identity and significant influences in their lives. Students will explore the topic through the RadioAmbulante podcast “Sisters” and the painting “Las dos Fridas” by Frida Khalo. Students will practice metalinguistic awareness and develop their translanguaging skills through explicit instruction on the use of transitional phrases related to cause and effect in English and Spanish. Then students will use these phrases to engage in conversations with their peers to discuss how the different influences in their lives have shaped their identities. Finally, students will produce a written summary of the relationship between the primary influences in their lives and the primary characteristics of their identities. 

This lesson is designed for a 90-minute period at the high school level for a dual language Heritage or Spanish Language Arts class. However, it could easily be divided into sections or modified for middle school students or advanced Spanish world language students. In this lesson, students build on their analysis from lesson 1 to consider how the influences in their lives have formed their identity and how they can ensure that the influences in their future lead them toward their goals. First students explore how people’s identities are impacted by context through an analysis of the influences and dominant aspects of their identity in three familiar contexts. They then analyze the poem “A Julia de Burgos”, the values represented in the poem, and their own values. Next, they analyze the painting “La creación de las aves” by Remedios Varo to see how it is possible for a person's identity to fully align with their values. Finally, students analyze how past and current influences in their lives have made them who they are and consider what future influences will help them to achieve a future self that aligns with their personal values, and present this analysis verbally to their classmates. 

The OER Quality Framework was developed by the Oregon Open Learning Team to describe indicators of high-quality OER for consideration in a variety of applications on the Oregon Open Learning Hub and in Oregon education settings. The OER Quality Framework consists of three tools and a glossary of terms to provide context for language used throughout the Framework. This "Emergent Bilingual" version of the framework was created to evaluate instructional resources specifically designed to support students who are emergent bilingual. It contains three additional criteria under the heading of "Critical Pedagogical Practices for Learners who are Emergent Bilingual": Translanguaging, Criticality, and Negotiation of Meaning.

 Students will learn about what constitutes various aspects of identity, including gender identity, sexual orientation, and explore how experiences of identity can shift across different cultures. We will discuss why acknowledging gender diversity is important, ways to respect each other, and more. 

 In this lesson we will explore how peer pressure is related to social bullying - when someone uses their influence to harm or humiliate another person or leave them out of the group. We will use scenarios to explore some of the ways we might sometimes feel pressure to go along with our friends even when they don’t want to. We’ll talk about integrity and how to use it to help us make decisions.  And what we can do when we see, or know that someone is being bullied. 

 In this lesson, teachers will describe how puberty prepares human bodies for the potential to reproduce as well as the process of human reproduction with the aid of a PowerPoint presentation. Teachers should review information learned last class while going through slides and questioning the students on what they recall. Teachers explain to students that all of the changes they experience during puberty are due to a new surge of hormones that both females and males experience, often differently. Teachers will also discuss the process of human reproduction by describing the steps needed to conceive a baby. The last activity has students create a diagram of the steps of conception in the right order for teachers to assess what they have retained from the lesson. All mistakes should be reviewed and corrected by the teacher, and then end the lesson with an open-discussion for question.
