"Metabolic regulation is vital to maintaining energy balance throughout the body, and different cell types have different ways of maintaining this balance. CAMKK2 is an enzyme common to various cells that aids in breaking down glucose through cellular respiration, but the details of how CAMKK2 carries out that role in different cells remains unclear. To find out, researchers deleted the gene for CAMKK2 from human kidney and liver-derived cells. Deleting CAMKK2 significantly reduced cellular respiration in both cell types versus parental cells. However, isolated mitochondrial respiration increased in kidney cells but decreased in liver cells. Proteomic analysis traced this difference to translational and transcriptional changes in succinate dehydrogenase (SDH). SDH is the only enzyme complex that participates in both the Krebs cycle and electron transport chain. Removing or overexpressing SDH subunit B in CAMKK2-deleted cells confirmed the functional link between SDH and CAMKK2..."

During this lab, students learn about the life cycle of corals, including how they grow and reproduce. Students consider the chemistry of seawater and the importance of the symbiotic relationship between corals and zooxanthellae in the formation of coral reefs. They blow CO2 through calcium hydroxide (limewater) to model how respiration assists coral in precipitating calcium carbonate. Students also build on the coral polyp models they made in Lab 2 to demonstrate coral growth, reproduction, and reef formation.

This unit covers the processes of photosynthesis, extinction, biomimicry and bioremediation. In the first lesson on photosynthesis, students learn how engineers use the natural process of photosynthesis as an exemplary model of a complex yet efficient process for converting solar energy to chemical energy or distributing water throughout a system. In the next lesson on species extinction, students learn that it is happening at an alarming rate. Students discover that the destruction of habitat is the main reason many species are threatened and how engineers are trying to stop this habitat destruction. The third lesson introduces students to the idea of biomimicry or looking to nature for engineering ideas. And, in the fourth and final lesson, students learn about a specialty branch of engineering called bioremediation the use of living organisms to aid in the clean up of pollutant spills.

The collection provides student activity files with Excel instructions and Instructor Activity files with Excel instructions and solutions to problems.

Students will be able to perform linear regression analysis, find correlation coefficient, create a scatter plot and find the r-square using MS Excel 365. "Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death and one of the most prevalent forms of dementia, affecting over 50 million people worldwide. Unfortunately, the molecular signaling pathways underlying neurodegeneration in Alzheimer’s disease are not clearly understood. A recent study identified a link between two physiological phenomena that are affected in Alzheimer's disease: disrupted calcium signaling, which is associated with memory loss and cognitive dysfunction; and increased iron accumulation, which results in neurotoxicity in the brain. Using genetically modified human cell lines and mice, the researchers studied the mechanistic connections between calcium signaling and iron transport. They found that calcium (Ca²⁺) signaling through CAMKK2 and CAMK4 proteins had direct effects on transferrin protein-mediated iron transport..."
