Many folks are using this crisis moment as an opportunity to consider what we are doing in our classrooms. Our face-to-face courses have imposed a variety of structures on us (e.g., credit hours) that have shaped our teaching. But, moving towards the fall, we’d like to prompt you to think about it more in terms of the actual time spent doing the work. Think through the work you think is fair for your students to do, think about how much work you can reasonably do – and design accordingly. How much work is too much (or too little) work for my students? How much work is too much work for my TAs or for me? How do I design an online course? This book will help guide your thinking about how best to design your course so it works for everyone, and offers meaningful opportunities for engagement. This resource was written for students working in externship or internship settings, with a focus on social justice or access to justice-focused placements. An externship is simply a placement completed under supervision for credit in an organization such as a law firm, clinic, NGO, or other workplace context. Although the text will be of most immediate use to externship and internship students, it will also be relevant for students working in legal clinics or other law placement settings. This particular text was written for students working in a Canadian context. In Canada, provinces and territories have their own Law Societies. Most references in this text focus on one Canadian province, Ontario, but similar materials and resources are typically available in other provinces and territories. Significant provincial differences will be noted. This text is open source and will be updated over time.

Literature, the Humanities, and Humanity attempts to make the study of literature more than simply another school subject that students have to take. At a time when all subjects seem to be valued only for their testability, this book tries to show the value of reading and studying literature, even earlier literature. It shows students, some of whom will themselves become teachers, that literature actually has something to say to them. Furthermore, it shows that literature is meant to be enjoyed, that, as the Roman poet Horace (and his Renaissance disciple Sir Philip Sidney) said, the functions of literature are to teach and to delight. The book will also be useful to teachers who want to convey their passion for literature to their students. After an introductory chapter that offers advice on how to read (and teach) literature, the book consists of a series of chapters that examine individual literary works ranging from The Iliad to Charles Dickens’ Bleak House. These chapters can not substitute for reading the actual works. Rather they are intended to help students read those works. They are attempts to demystify the act of reading and to show that these works, whether they are nearly three thousand or less than two hundred years old, still have important things to say to contemporary readers.

Nursing Care at the End of Life: What Every Clinician Should Know addresses an essential component of the basic educational preparation for the professional registered nurse student. Recent studies show that only one in four nurses feel confident in caring for dying patients and their families and less than 2% of overall content in nursing textbooks are related to end-of-life care. Despite the tremendous growth in palliative and end-of-life care programs across the country, very few nursing education programs provide adequate education on this topic for future nurses. The purpose of this textbook is to provide an indepth look at death and dying in this country and explore the vital role of the nurse in assisting patients and families along the journey towards the end of life. There is an emphasis throughout the book on the simple, yet understated value of effective interpersonal communication between the patient and clinician. The text provides a basic foundation for understanding death and dying, including a brief historical examination of some main conceptual models associated with how patients cope with impending loss. An overview of illness trajectories and models of care, such as hospice and palliative care, are discussed. Lastly, the latest evidence based approaches for pain and symptom management, ethical concerns, cultural considerations, care at the time of death, and bereavement are examined. The goal of this text is to foster the necessary skills for nurses to provide compassionate care to individuals who are nearing the end of life and families who are experiencing the loss of a loved one.
