Acceso is a complete, interactive curriculum for intermediate-level learners of Spanish. The materials on the site are provided freely to the public and are intended as a replacement for commercial textbooks, which are generally ill-suited to the learning outcomes now considered crucial to successful language study. These materials are supplemented by an online workbook built on the MySpanishLab platform of Pearson Education, Inc., as well as detailed lesson plans, rubrics for the evaluation of student work, and reliable instruments for measuring student progress and learning outcomes. Informed by adult learning theory and social-justice pedagogy, this new OER program focuses on authentic communicative content that is meaningful to students. Its structure supports the needs of inexperienced teaching assistants while also providing flexibility for more experienced instructors. Students are coached about language acquisition, with explicit focus on Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational communication skills. Culture is omnipresent, with OER resources that have been selected with great attention to whose voices are being heard. Representation and inclusion are guiding principles, and tokenism is rejected.

¡Chévere! Introductory Spanish I & II offer a comprehensive introductory Spanish sequence, providing guidance and practice in reading, writing, listening to, and speaking Spanish. Each module includes thematic vocabulary, sequenced grammar instruction, numerous self-check drills and exercises, open-form communicative activities, scaffolded writing assignments, and reading passages exploring various aspects of life and culture in the Spanish-speaking world. Each grammar section is introduced by a short reading passage to highlight new structures and patterns within their linguistic context. Within each lesson, self-grading practice activities with targeted feedback allow students to learn by doing and track their level of mastery. The text is accompanied by engaging images and videos throughout, and all vocabulary and reading passages include audio files to practice pronunciation and listening comprehension.

This is a preliminary Open Textbook composed of original instructional materials created for the OER-based course, and the team is working to create a full open textbook at a later date. Separate files are included in the Additional Files section in a compressed .zip format for editing and quicker uploads/downloads within classes. Grammar and vocabulary pre-class activities, lectures, and post-class homework are included within these seven chapters:

Entrada libre is an intermediate/advanced college-level Spanish OER grammar manual for second language learners and heritage speakers of Spanish at the community college level. Instructors will be able to download the entire manual or use the OER Remixer from LibreTexts to adapt, edit, and customize content and publish it in their LMS. Each of the 24 units includes a reading with examples of the grammar points used in context, grammar explanation, and self-graded follow-up activities for practice using H5P as a formative assessment. The H5P activities can also be accessed from the LibreStudio collection. Entrada libre can be used with Acceso, an existing open-access project created by the University of Kansas which contains great cultural readings and resources for intermediate and advanced levels.

Leyendas y arquetipos del Romanticismo español is an introduction to nineteenth-century Spanish literature with a thematic focus on legends and archetypes. It presents Romanticism in the context of nineteenth-century literary and social movements. It is designed as a first anthology for intermediate Spanish students at American universities. Although brief, it includes poetry, drama in verse and short story. The works have been selected for their literary interest and the social importance of their themes. They are all by canonical authors.

¡Listos! is a series of units for Heritage Spanish learners in grades 6-12. Three lessons aligned to the K12 Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) form four thematic clusters. Relevant scenarios related to personal life, college tasks, career readiness and civic participation frame each lesson and increase student engagement by making learning authentic and relevant to real issues that students face. Each lesson identifies an intermediate or advanced proficiency target that supports language acquisition in the interpersonal, interpretive and presentational modes. The project also provides teachers with a replicable approach to lesson design for adapting or creating their own materials.

¡Naveguemos Juntos! Navigate with Us! welcomes you to the Spanish-speaking world and its language. This OER is designed to provide students access to interactive activities in order to reinforce the acquired knowledge of basic Spanish vocabulary and grammatical points. The activities presented in each chapter are contextualized and interconnected through the Spanish language and culture.

¡Naveguemos Juntos! was created for students taking the first year of Spanish. It is intended as an introductory Spanish course that covers levels 1 and 2 at community colleges. All resources found here are free! Instructors can use it as is, download a PDF of all the activities, or incorporate it in the LMS of their college (including Canvas). Furthermore, instructors have the option to adapt, edit, modify, and create their own version by using the LibreTexts’ Remixer tool.

The goal of this OER is to help students access these free activities while saving them hundreds of dollars in costly homework platforms offered by commercial textbooks.

PLUMA is a narrative-based language learning program for the first three levels of college Spanish. This program is a complete curriculum and can stand on its own. This program is organically aligned with ACTFL, featuring Can-Do Statements as an organizing principle and as a springboard from which the learner can direct and personalize their learning. It is grounded in narrative-based teaching and learning that evolves from people’s lived experiences and fragments of the history and culture of their countries of origin.

The goal of this project is to provide high-quality, accessible primary sources to those teaching and studying the histories and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world and the indigenous peoples of Latin America. Our modules cover a wide range of topics, but all consist of the same essential parts:

¡Qué viva la música! Repaso de conversación en español, or Long Live Music! Spanish Conversational Review is an open textbook intended for conversational review, typically a fourth-semester Spanish class. The textbook is organized around nine different songs that provide students opportunities to practice, aurally and orally, as well as in writing, the main communicative goals and key grammatical structures learned in previous classes. It can also be used in similar high school classes.

COERLL has partnered with Rose Potter and Betsy Arnold to publish Recorridos-Don Quijote, a pair of openly-licensed books for the study of Cervantes’ Don Quijote in upper level Spanish courses, including AP. The student workbook, accessible online for free, deepens students’ understanding of the text through reading, pre-reading, and post-reading activities and glosses. The companion teacher support facilitates the teaching of Don Quijote through student-centered strategies and activities, historical and cultural information, quizzes, exams and more.

Salón de clase, Intermediate Spanish for Education Professionals is a comprehensive intermediate Spanish open access textbook with reading, listening, speaking, and writing practice for students who have an interest and/or intend to pursue a career in the field of Education (teachers, administrators, counselors, psychologists, social workers, support staff members, paraprofessionals, among others). This Open Education Resource (OER) aims to explore the role of Spanish language and Spanish speakers in the American education system, as well as to improve student communicative abilities in Spanish. Salón de clase integrates interactive activities (h5p), video interviews with Spanish speakers to present authentic materials, and topics related to education. For both, the teacher and student alike, this Spanish I book is intended for a first-year, college Elementary Spanish I level. It also attempts to make the study of a language in this case, Spanish, more than another required subject. Eliminating the artificial limitation of the traditional textbook, offers the teacher and the student the ability to tailor the content to their own needs. Also, this book tries to show the value of learning a second language from a high quality pedagogical criteria at a low cost solution.

Welcome to Spanish Grammar in Context, where you will find detailed grammar explanations of the Spanish language. Unlike traditional reference grammars, each topic is explained using authentic video examples from the Spanish in Texas project. Accompanying practice quizzes are available on an open Canvas course site.

This peer-reviewed textbook is designed for the true beginner with U.S. college students in mind. It contains themed chapters, which are divided into 8 sections. Each section has its own set of learning objectives, and is further separated into three types of assignments, Para estudiar en casa (with detailed explanations), Para practicar en casa (homework exercises), and Para practicar en clase (paired and group classwork activities). The explanations and primary input are written to be easily comprehensible. The individual exercises are geared towards acquisition of form and function, and the communicative classwork exercises promote interpersonal exchanges between students. The digital copy includes some embedded audio files, and we are developing a website to house many more resources.
