We created this text with these principles in mind: Anyone can be a leader at any time. Leadership is not title specific and the field of Early Care and Education needs leaders from diverse background, experiences, and expertise. Leadership has an inherent set of responsibilities and leaders need to understand what those are and how to navigate them. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are important topics and leadership should be grounded in them. Reflection is a key part of professional practice and should be encouraged and supported at all levels. It is important to represent a variety of contexts, individuals and scenarios. White space is important. How we interact with learning materials is important. We hope you will find our design effective.

Leaders in Early Childhood Education and K-12 Education exist at levels and take many different paths to leadership. Some receive formal education and while many find themselves in leadership roles because they have the most tenure. Most become leaders through a combination of education and experience – and all are woefully underprepared for what they experience.

These modules were designed to empower leaders at all levels and in any educational context. The purpose of this project was to understand how postsecondary educators perceived the emergent technology of learning analytics and to create a best practices guide for those interested in implementing learning analytics at their institutions. To understand how different university stakeholders perceived the available metrics in a variety of learning management systems, we conducted an exploratory, mixed-methods study at a mid-sized Ontario university. Survey and focus group data were collected and analyzed to examine the perspectives of faculty instructors, students, administrators, and support staff of their familiarity and knowledge of learning analytics for teaching and learning, as well as their interpretations of graphic representations of student activity in LMSs. The findings suggest that educators recognize the potential of learning analytics for student support, report limited usability in current visualizations, and privacy and the ethics of using student data. It is hoped that this practical guide will assist users in going beyond superficial measures of course activity or incorrect interpretations of data to harness the power of learning analytic tools in teaching and learning in higher education.

When discussing learning in the digital age, most focus on the technology first. However, the emphasis made in this book is that it’s about the learner not just the technology. One of the things that is easy to lose track of when talking about learning in the digital age is the learner. Technology is important and it has significant impact but it is still about the person who is using the technology. Many people conflate learning in the digital age with technology in today’s age. This important misconception is common and results from our failure to examine our understanding of what “learning” really is. Of course, Most of this depends on a person’s epistemology. There are numerous definitions of what learning is and often they come to how a person sees the world. Some argue that learning is about a change in behavior due to experiences, others state simply that learning is being able to do something new that you were not able to do before. Regardless of what side you choose, to understand what learning in the digital age is, one has to understand what learning itself is.
