Film Festival Assignment (Video Competition)
A storyboard combines the script with the visuals to create a quick template for shooting. Students do not have to be artists to create a storyboard. This particular template would work great with stick figures or basic drawings. Instructors can have students turn this assignment in person or on Blackboard. It is a good idea to give students feedback about their storyboards including letting them know if an idea is too broad, too vague, or needs any adjustments.
Assignment:
Students should create a storyboard using the template below. Students can draw in the boxes on the computer or can insert the notes and then print it out. Students can draw stick figures and the art does not need to be intricate. Remember this is really a series of notes for you to help with filming.
Students should focus on the following:
- What is happening in the scene?
- This is the students’ chance to all agree about how a scene should look.
- What types of shots will be used to show the action? Close ups, wide-shots, etc.
- Who is in the scene?
- What direction will the actors be going? Will the camera move?
- Where will the actors/actresses be looking?
- Are there transitions between the scenes or frames?
Students would create boxes for each of the numbers below to describe the scene, similar to animation storyboards.
