This course uses the study of rhetoric as an opportunity to offer instruction in critical thinking. Through extensive writing and speaking assignments, students will develop their abilities to analyze texts of all kinds and to generate original and incisive ideas of their own. Critical thinking and original analysis as expressed in writing and in speech are the paramount goals of this class. The course will thus divide its efforts between an examination of the subject matter and an examination of student writing and speaking, in order to encourage in both instances the principal aims of the course.

This Lesson Plan was created by Joanna Pruitt as part of the 2020 ESU-NDE Remote Learning Plan Project. Educators worked with coaches to create Lesson Plans as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.The attached Lesson Plan is designed for 7th or 8th grade English Language Arts students. Students will learn not only about how to write friendly letters, but they will also learn about our country in a fun and engaging way. This is a letter-writing challenge that connects students from all around the United States. Students are assigned a state and they must select three schools within that state to write a letter challenge to. The goal is to see who receives the most letters back by the end of the school year and to learn about the state that they sent letters to.

Students will be able to foster an appreciation of literature and develop creative skills in public speaking and performance. Students will analyze various literary forms (poetry, novels, plays, letters, diaries, etc.) as texts for oral presentation. Students will explore oral traditions and other nonliterary sources and events as oral presentation material. Class exercises introduce vocal, physical and other speaking techniques to effectively communicate a point of view. Recommended: College-level reading and writing skills are highly recommended for success in this course.

The content is related to an aspect of building or maintaining a Civil Society— topics that affect students' personal or professional lives on a daily basis. Each chapter has four basic parts, including a brief background on and discussion of the topic(s) presented, classroom activities designed for a lower intermediate class (but which can be adapted to a more advanced level), other resources for authentic materials (internet, books, videos, etc.), and references for what has been presented. Paradigms, theories, and techniques have been developed to aid the instructors in their tasks. Techniques such as scaffolding help to make the content more accessible to the student. Theories such as learning strategies and multiple intelligences help instructors to appropriately design their lessons for maximum benefit to each student's own academic culture. Choices of activities such as reading, discussion, and interviews aid the instructor to focus on strengthening the students' basic language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) in an integrated way that will foster communication and promote the students' self-reliance in the target language.
