From the Tissue Level to Clinical Manifestations and Inter-professional Care
Short Description: This multimedia resource provides the science behind the disease that a health care professional is managing and an explanation of the signs and symptoms a patient is experiencing, starting at the tissue level. Each disease begins with a review of normal anatomy, histology and physiology - followed by the changes the disease has on the tissue (histopathology or anatomic pathology), organ (gross pathology), and function (pathophysiology). Videos and photos of gross pathological specimens & histological slides are included in every topic, with videolessons guiding viewers on the observable pathological changes. Because working with patients in their health journey is a team affair, this resource highlights the interprofessional collaboration that occurs between health care providers. This resource includes personal interviews with many health care professionals, explaining their role in a patient's diagnosis and/or treatment and management.
Long Description: This multimedia resource is intended to ‘bridge the gap’ between normal anatomy and pathology texts and clinically-oriented resources. This resource includes personal interviews with many health care professionals, explaining their role in a patient’s diagnosis and/or treatment and management.
When appropriate, this resource includes parts from other Open Education resources which speak in more detail on normal anatomy & physiology, clinical skills, interprofessional collaboration, and the patient experience with a visit to the hospital.

With Examples in Java
Short Description: Programming patterns are solutions to problems that require the creation of a small fragment of code that will be part of a larger program. Hence, this book is about teaching you how to write such fragments of code. However, it is not about teaching you the syntax of the statements in the fragments, it assumes that you already know the syntax. Instead, it is about finding solutions to problems that arise when first learning to program.
Long Description: Patterns can be used to teach problem solving at various levels of abstraction (which are inversely related to the level of detail). Programming patterns are solutions to problems that require the creation of a small fragment of code that will be part of a larger program. Hence, this book is about teaching you how to write such fragments of code. However, it is not about teaching you the of the statements in the fragments, it assumes that you already know the syntax. Though the syntax of a particular programming language can be confusing at first, it is, actually, fairly easy to learn and, given a solution to a problem, it is fairly easy to write the code that implements it. It’s much more difficult to come up with the solution, and that’s what this book will teach you to do. After you finish reading this book you will have a library of solutions that you can use, and an understanding of how to add to that library.

How the Music Industry Works, Where the Money Goes, and Why
Short Description: The history of music is closely linked to the history of copyright law. This book explores how the law shaped music and the music industry. From church and court patronage in pre-19th Century Europe, to the effects of social media on music, this book explores the abiding influence of the law on music.
Long Description: I have organized this book in four parts, each of which is divided into multiple chapters. The first part concerns the history and structure of the music industry. Understanding the music industry as it exists today requires an understanding of how it developed over time. Today’s music industry would most certainly not be the one anybody would design from scratch. It has many inefficiencies and quirks that reflect the economic pressures and musical concerns of bygone ages. The second part of the book provides an overview of copyright law and the ways it interacts with music. Nearly every aspect of the music industry is thoroughly infused with the reward structure governed by copyright law. Nearly every dollar that flows from consumer to artist in the music industry is parsed out, divided, and contested in accordance with the system of rights and obligations the flow from copyright protections. One could even make a convincing argument that the very form of popular music (length of songs, cyclical structures, prevalence of cover songs, etc.) is highly influenced by the reward structure imposed by copyright law. The third and fourth parts of the book deal with the issues surrounding infringement of copyrights. One of the fundamental and least understood aspects of music copyright is that there are two separate music copyrights: one involving the musical work (or “song”) and one that involving a recording of that musical work (often called the “master right”). There are several aspects of the music industry that are not covered in depth in this book, and that is by design. The breadth and depth of this book is governed primarily by the purpose it is intended to serve — as a textbook for a 10-week undergraduate course. Additional breadth or depth would introduce material that I do not believe could be reasonably included in the course as I currently teach it. In my experience, there simply is not enough time to cover more material in that time than is in this text.

Government agencies frequently contract with nonprofit or for-profit organizations to provide services …
Government agencies frequently contract with nonprofit or for-profit organizations to provide services to improve the well-being of their clients―for example, by reducing recidivism, homelessness, or drug use. Governments have traditionally paid service providers on the basis of the number of clients they treat. The past decade has seen a number of Pay for Success (PFS) or results-based finance (RBF) programs, in which service providers are paid for their outcomes or results. For example, whereas a government agency contracting with a service provider to reduce recidivism among young men released from prison would traditionally have paid the service provider for the hours spent counseling a client, a PFS contract pays the organization for success in reducing the clients’ rate of recidivism from some baseline. This handbook is written for government officials considering the adoption of Pay For Success (PFS) programs and for students in public policy and business schools interested in studying outcomes-oriented government contracts for services. Part One introduces concepts necessary to develop and operate a service delivery program and then surveys some of the issues specific to PFS. Part Two presents two detailed case studies and a number of shorter descriptions of PFS programs. Part Three focuses on the components of PFS programs; it also discusses barriers to their development and ways of overcoming them.

Short Description: This open textbook is a living document of knowledge and skills needed by finance students and professionals to design, govern, and invest financial resources from savings set aside during the working years, either by law (e.g., Canada Pension Plan), by mutual agreement (e.g. occupational pension plan), or privately (e.g. Registered Retirement Savings Plan, Tax-Free Savings Plan). Saving for retirement is among the most important financial decisions that Canadians will make in their lifetime, along with getting a mortgage and saving for their child(ren)’s education. This textbook is a work-in-progress that will evolve and grow over time to provide current information for adoption and adaptation in Accounting, Finance, and Management courses and programs.

Working together to observe, question, design, prototype, and implement/reject technology in support of people's valued beings and doings
Short Description: Digital technologies old and new are not objects that can be packed inside a box. They are a seamless, indivisible combination of people, organizations, policies, economies, histories, cultures, knowledge, and material things that are continuously shaped and reshaped. Every one of us innovates-in-use our everyday technologies, we just do not always know it. Not only are we shaped by the networked information tools in our midst, but we shape them and thereby shape others. For us to advance individual agency across diverse community knowledge and cultural wealth within the fabric of communities, we need to nurture our cognitive, socio-emotional, information, and progressive community engagement skills along with, and sometimes in advance of, our technical skills which then serve as just-in-time in-fill learning. This is the call placed by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. – to rapidly shift from a ‘thing-oriented’ society to a ‘person-oriented’ society. In support of this shift, each session of the book begins first with a social chapter with background knowledge probe, conceptual introductions, and a lesson plan for the session. A technical chapter follows with technical introductions and hands-on activities, and a concluding wrap up and comprehension check. The technical of the Orange Unit especially focuses on electronics and physical computer components; the Blue Unit highlights software through a series of introductory programming activities, with possibilities for alternate pathways for those who bring in some existing programming experience; the Rainbow Unit then brings the hardware and software together into networked systems, concluding with a final design adventure. The general learning outcome objectives of this book are to help readers: • Develop a clear hands-on working understanding of the physical and software layers of computers and networks; • Evolve a more holistic and nuanced understanding of the sociotechnical artifacts we use as a daily part of our professional lives; • Develop a critical approach to sociotechnical artifacts to counter systemic injustices related to race, class/caste, gender, and other cultural dynamics; and • Advance community agency in appropriating technology to achieve our individual and community development goals through a reconsidered digital literacy learning and practice.
