Hydrophilic Porphyrins based Chemosensors for First Transition Series Metal Ions [Chemistry]
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted
CC BY-NC
Rating
0.0 stars

General Chemistry is a two-semester course (General Chemistry I, SCC 201 and General Chemistry II, SCC 202) required for majors in Biology and Environmental Sciences.
This lab experiment, aligned to LaGuardia Community College‰Ûªs Inquiry and Problem Solving Core Competency and Written Communication Ability was designed for General Chemistry I (SCC 201 Honors) course. Honors courses in LaGuardia emphasize critical thinking, analytical writing, and introduce students to research. This lab experiment provides an opportunity for students to engage in hands-on laboratory work, to develop laboratory skills, and to conduct research in the classroom by using two water soluble porphyrins to detect transition metal ions in a solution and on a paper support. Overall, this experiment was designed to meet the demand for undergraduate research experiences and to engage all the students in addressing a research question or problem that is of interest to the scientific community.
In order to demonstrate their learning, students write a formal lab report which includes an understanding of experiment procedures (methods and techniques), safety hazards, instrumentation, understanding of concepts and theories gained by performing the experiment, collecting data through observation and/or experimentation, interpretation of the data (Ultraviolet-visible spectra), analysis of the data in tables and graphs, and drawing conclusions and perspective from the experiment. The knowledge students gain during this lab experiment will be useful to connect with future chemistry courses and can also be utilized to do research. The lab write-up is deposited for the assessment of the Written Communication Ability to which SCC 201 is aligned.
This experiment also raises awareness about a global concern. Students detect transition metal ions in aqueous solutions by use of porphyrins. Due to rapid growth in technology and industrialization, transition metals are used in large amounts in a variety of electronic products. The improper preservation of the industrial wastes leads to accumulation of these metals into water resources, which can create danger to human health and the environment. Therefore, there is a need to carefully monitor and frequently detect transition metal ions content in the environment.
This lab experiment was implemented in an Honors section of General Chemistry SCC 201 and was worth about 3.5% of the final grade. The students are likely to spend 3 hours completing the experiment in the lab and another 3-4 hours completing the lab write-up.
The Program Goals that this assignment targets:
1. To provide training to the students in various lab techniques and how to utilize these techniques to conduct research.
The Student Learning Objective (s) that this assignment targets:
1. Students will have an enhanced conceptual understanding of the theory to practice relationship and will achieve higher level reasoning skills.
2. Students will be able to develop their practical competence in laboratory work.
3. Students will be able to collect data through observation and/or experimentation, preparation of solutions of known concentration, characterize the compounds by UV-vis spectra, and draw conclusions and perspective of the experiment.
4. Communicate their results through the formal lab report format of: Introduction, Chemicals, Procedure, Data, Discussion and References.
LaGuardia‰Ûªs Core Competencies and Communication Abilities
The Course Objective (s) that this assignment targets:
1. Based on the principles of environmental chemistry, students will be able to detect the transition metal ions using a porphyrin as a sensor and explore the complex connections between chemistry and real world issues.

This SALT Interpretation Pack has been designed as a resource for educators and students as they explore the themes of the Hüseyin Bahri Alptekin “I am not a studio artist” exhibition at SALT Beyoğlu in Istanbul, Turkey. Designed for use in high school classrooms, its contents include activities, multimedia resources, terminology and opportunities for discussion. Educators are encouraged to adapt, shape and build upon these materials to best meet the needs of their students and teaching curricula.

Hüseyin Bahri Alptekin was an artist, thinker, teacher, writer and curator who passed away in 2007. In the early 1990s, Alptekin began to form an artistic production that explored the effects of globalization, immigration and exile, as well as cross-cultural image circulation. Alptekin was a determined collaborator interested in authorless production, and throughout his career formed many artist-run collaboratives, including Grup Grip-in, the Sea Elephant Travel Agency and the Bunker Research Group. His multi-referential work consists of photo-installations, collages, videos, objects, and large-scale production such as a life-size truck overloaded with colorful plastic soccer balls, which together express a multi-layered and complex visual language.

“I am not a studio artist” is the most comprehensive exhibition of Alptekin’s works to date, both in Turkey and internationally.

What is Personal Finance?  A great question to start off a lesson on managing and maintaining money.  Have each student write down their idea of what they think Personal Finance means.  You will be surprised at the different answers and ideas that students will come up with.  Have students share some of their thoughts they may have on the subject of personal finance and how it determines their future success.  High School students need a good understanding on how to management their money because a lot of these students have started to work part time jobs.

ISKME GoPro Learning Challenge Submission Example

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about how I could incorporate video into my own learning processes, and wondered, if I were to participate in the ISKME GoPro Learning Challenge, what would I want to create? I looked back to the very first time I really started using video in my daily life, and, surprise surprise, it was to create a teaching tool for myself.

I’m a dancer, and for years I’d practiced dancing in my bedroom, sometimes in front of a mirror. But I’d never recorded myself dancing. Once I did, I realized it could have a tremendous impact on my skill level as a dancer. Especially when preparing for a performance, the videos enabled me to see my weaknesses and memorize choreography more readily.

My great idea is to use GoPro to record myself and my fellow students as we learn new choreography, and to share those videos with each other and with our teacher so we can track and measure our progress, and receive personalized feedback.

ISRAEL: A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE LAND
Only Sharing Permitted

This material is about the history of Israel, a small strip of land on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, and its importance to three major religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Israel was a major crossroad between Europe, Asia, and Africa because of its location in the middle of the region. It had different periods of rule by different empires, and during this time, many impressive architectural structures were built, like the aqueducts of Caesarea and the fortress of Masada. The British also ruled over Israel for a period of time after World War I. Eventually, in 1948, Israel became a modern state after being granted some of the original land by the United Nations. Israel is the Jewish homeland, which Jews have had since ancient times, and the idea of a specific state called “Palestine” is factually incorrect.

The transgressive coastal sequence, as a fundamental concept in stratigraphy, will be explored by the students in a hands-on activity based on a set of high-resolution seismic profiles collected in the shoreface off Assateague Island, Maryland and Virginia. Small groups of 2-3 students will identify primary surfaces, such as the ravinement surface and sequence boundaries, and major sedimentary facies, such as offshore shoals, flood-tidal deltas, and tidal inlets, in a set of shore-parallel and shore-perpendicular lines. The exercise begins with factors controlling relative sea level and leads into accommodation space and preservation potential.
