When a function depends on multiple independent variables, the curly-d symbol denotes slopes calculated by jiggling only one independent variable at a time. This is a multivariable cousin to the derivative. We use this notation in future sections to keep track of how molecules are generated or degraded by different reactions.

This guide provides a primer on copyright and use permissions. It is intended to support teachers, librarians, curriculum experts and others in identifying the terms of use for digital resources, so that the resources may be appropriately (and legally) used as part of lessons and instruction. The guide also helps educators and curriculum experts in approaching the task of securing permission to use copyrighted materials in their classrooms, collections, libraries or elsewhere in new ways and with fewer restrictions than fair use potentially offers. The guide was created as part of ISKME's Primary Source Project, and is the result of collaboration with copyright holders, intellectual property experts, and educators.

The audio narrated and interactive tutorial introduces what the concept of plagiarism is. It explains how plagiarism can be recognised and includes real-life examples of the impact of plagiarism inside and outside of academia. Strategies on how and why plagiarism is avoided are covered. The tutorial includes a number of self assessment interspersed throughout. This tutorial was adapted from the "Avoid Plagiarism" tutorial developed by IT Tallaght Library, Dublin, Ireland. This resource was created using Articulate Storyline. The resource contains the source file for the online resource found at: http://www.ucd.ie/library/elearning/plagiarism/story.html

Why do quantitative biologists sometimes claim that mRNA copy numbers are Poisson distributed in simple models of gene transcription? The first video segment addresses this question under the simplifying assumption that mRNA degradation occurs after a well-defined, deterministic lifetime, and the second segment illustrates the same basic concept for the more realistic situation in which degradation is stochastic.

This is a remix of Pre-Algebra/Beginning Algebra Concepts - Computer Resources with some additions to the Integers activities. https://www.oercommons.org/authoring/28963-pre-algebra-beginning-algebra-concepts-computer

The intention of this curriculum guide is to provide teachers with supplemental materials to use to support students in strengthening their skills in various concept areas that are crucial for understanding beginning algebra. The activities are broken down by skill with links provided below. This is intended as a way to provide students with engaging, primarily computer-based activities to get extra practice with material that is covered elsewhere in the curriculum. This collection focuses on simulations and games using the computer—some resources may be ripe for teachers to develop unique activities to accompany the simulation and some possible suggestions are included with the descriptions. This series is intended to be pick-and-choose.

In this Curriculum Guide:

Activities and practice with: Integers, Exponents, Order of Operations, Distributive Property, Expressions, Equations and Basic Graphing

Probability: Central limit theorem

After heuristically deriving Stirling's approximation in the first video segment, we outline a simple example of the central limit theorem for the case of the binomial distribution. In the final segment, we explain how the central limit theorem is used to suggest that physical experiments are characterized by normally-distributed (Gaussian) fluctuations while fluctuations in biological experiments are said to fill out log-normal distributions.

In the first video segment, we study the distribution, average, and variance for the Bernoulli coin-toss process. The binomial distribution results from stringing together a series of coin tosses. In the second segment, we study the limit of "rare" events, which is described by the Poisson distribution.

Push and Support Cards: A Bridge to Advanced Mathematics for the Multi-Level Adult Education Classroom Curriculum Guide
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted

Adult education classrooms are commonly comprised of learners who have widely disparate levels of mathematical problem-solving skills. This is true regardless of what level a student may be assessed at when entering an adult education program or what level class they are placed in. Providing students with differentiated instruction in the form of Push and Support cards is one way to level this imbalance, keeping all students engaged in one high-cognitive task that supports and encourages learners who are stuck, while at the same time, providing extensions for students who move through the initial phase of the task quickly. Thus, all
students are continually moving forward during the activity, and when the task ends, all students have made progress in their journey towards developing conceptual understanding of mathematical ideas along with a productive disposition, belief in one’s own ability to successfully engage with mathematics.
