After teaching a unit about rocks and minerals, students are challenged with picking a site for a tunnel, drilling through a mountain with clay, reinforcing the hole to create a tunnel, and then testing their design. Students will also estimate and calculate the amount of time it takes them to drill.

This diabetes self-management case is being utilized in the dietetic internship program courses at Iowa State University: FSHN 554, 555, & 556 and was designed to increase student confidence in suggesting appropriate recommendations for the medication, blood sugar, and diet management aspects for someone with Type 2 diabetes. Students discover the mathematical constant phi, the golden ratio, through hands-on activities. They measure dimensions of "natural objects"—a star, a nautilus shell and human hand bones—and calculate ratios of the measured values, which are close to phi. Then students learn a basic definition of a mathematical sequence, specifically the Fibonacci sequence. By taking ratios of successive terms of the sequence, they find numbers close to phi. They solve a squares puzzle that creates an approximate Fibonacci spiral. Finally, the instructor demonstrates the rule of the Fibonacci sequence via a LEGO® MINDSTORMS® NXT robot equipped with a pen. The robot (already created as part of the companion activity, The Fibonacci Sequence & Robots) draws a Fibonacci spiral that is similar to the nautilus shape.

This First Year Writing assignment builds on narrative skills and introduces students to informational and argumentative writing using minimal primary and secondary research as well as drawing on elements on visual rhetoric.

So far this semester you have reflected on the potential career(s) you are interested in and why you are in college. Now you are going to widen your scope to learn about the major disciplines of humanities, physical sciences, and social sciences that liberal arts courses make up and build on that knowledge to take a look at your possible major and career more specifically. It is important when thinking about a major to understand what job options that field of study can lead to and understand what courses are required. When thinking about a career it is useful to learn what types of positions exist, what skills are needed, and what those job positions are like on a daily basis. It is also equally important to remember that in college a major is not equal to a specific career. This project gives you the chance to explore all of that.

In this activity, students play the roles of "time travel agents" creating an advertisement for a geologic time period which has been assigned to them. They will use the Earth Science Reference Tables (available on the internet) to learn some basic facts about their assigned period. A rubric for assessing student understanding is provided.
