"NOTCH1 is a protein implicated in various diseases, including breast cancer. In order to control Notch signaling, researchers have developed a light-activated tool called OptoNotch. OptoNotch is an engineered form of NOTCH1 that is activated under blue light. This mimics NOTCH1’s natural activation program: activation, release from the plasma membrane, translocation to the nucleus, and initiation of potentially harmful expression of different genes. The ability to activate NOTCH1 using only light makes OptoNotch highly targeted and easier to implement than chemical- or genetic-based systems. When deployed in two lines of breast cancer cells, OptoNotch could track how NOTCH1 contributed to accelerated cell proliferation, as well as cell migration, the phenotype of cancer cells in 3D cultures, mimicking patients' tumors, and resistance to common chemotherapy drugs. OptoNotch could help scientists to understand the roles of NOTCH1 in normal and disease conditions, and help screen for promising drug candidates..."

"Phosphorus is essential for life to function. It is a critical component of the energy metabolism molecules, genetic materials, and cell structures of all life. Phosphorus only enters natural ecosystems through the slow weathering of stone. Then microbes help maintain and regulate phosphorus by cycling it between its organic and inorganic forms. Understanding microbial phosphorus cycling is critical to many fields of study, like ecology and agriculture. However, researchers lack a comprehensive understanding of the phosphorus cycling genes microbes use, but the recently developed curated phosphorus cycling database (PCycDB) could help close that gap. PCycDB covers 10 phosphorus metabolic processes and 139 gene families, including several that have been missed elsewhere. Testing PCycDB with simulated datasets revealed high annotation accuracy, positive predictive value, sensitivity, specificity, and negative predictive value..."

"Many eukaryotic cells make and release small pockets of membrane called extracellular vesicles (EVs). EVs facilitate communication between cells in an organism and can transport many molecules like proteins, RNA, and lipids. Plants are no exception, and many types of EVs can be isolated from their juice, flesh, and roots. In the plants themselves, these EVs facilitate a range of critical functions like immunity, development, and plant–fungi communication. But EVs derived from plants could even have a place in human medicine. In particular, these EVS could be used to transport medications. Plant-derived EVs are more biodegradable and typically less expensive to generate than conventional synthetic carriers, as they can be extracted in bulk. This field is in its early stages, but studies have suggested that plant-derived EVs may also be less toxic and allergenic than conventional carriers..."

In the first bend of this unit, students will closely read multiple perspectives on the “American Dream” in
order to collect information to use and integrate that information into an evidence-based perspective.
Students will examine primary and secondary source documents to make informed decisions about
what information to collect that may inspire their writing about “The American Dream.”

In the second bend of this unit, students will engage in a short-research process to create a draft of
argumentative speech on the “American Dream” with a specific purpose, audience, and tone in mind.
They will use their inquiry research questions from bend one to begin analyzing search results and citing
and gathering relevant, accurate, and credible information.
