Read the Fine Print
Rating
0.0 stars

With this free video resource, students will be exposed to the economic way of thinking. Students will understand how to use economics in their lives and, ultimately, you’ll see the world differently-- all through engaging Hollywood production style videos.

Educators can use MRU's videos in a variety of ways, to include “flipping” the classroom, as study aids, supplementary material, concept reinforcement, or even as a full course offering.

In MRU's Principles of Microeconomics course, covers fundamental concepts like supply and demand and equilibrium. We also answer questions such as: How are prices determined? What did Adam Smith mean when he said the market process works like an “invisible hand”? How is it that we have access to fresh roses in very cold cities every Valentine’s Day? All key topics are covered to include competition, monopoly, price discrimination, externalities, public goods and more.

There are no prerequisites for this course, and it is accessible to beginners.

What is Marginal Revolution University (MRU)?

Many of us can remember our first great economics teacher who fundamentally changed how we see the world. At MRU, we try and deliver that experience to millions worldwide through video.

Founded as a nonprofit in 2012 by George Mason University economics professors Tyler Cowen and Alex Tabarrok, MRU is building the world’s largest online library of free economics education videos -- currently weighing in at more than 800 videos.

In this semester-long private mineral project, students become experts on one mineral. They write a paper about their mineral and use key information about it to publish a web page. Information should include provenance, physical properties, composition, recent related literature, photos of samples, optical properties, x-ray pattern, crystallography, economic value, atomic structure, other closely related minerals, associated myths, and a complete list of references based on GSA format.

This resource is a multistep problem solving task involving noticing patterns. I use this in my classroom at the beginning of the year to break problem solving down into manageable steps. Students are asked to read the problem, highlight the question, take notes on the important information and make a checklist of what they need to solve the problem, a box to organize the steps they take to solve it, and an answer box. I share this resource on our LMS, Seesaw, and also ask the students to record an explanation of their work at the end.

In this course, students identify issues in educational or other professional settings on which to focus their critical and creative thinking skills. Each student works through the different stages of research and action - from defining a manageable project to communicating findings and plans for further work. Supervision is provided when the student's research centers on new teaching practices, workshops in the community, or volunteer. The classes run as workshops in which students are introduced to and then practice using tools for research, writing, communicating, and supporting the work of others.

Producing Media
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted

This assignment aims to provide learners with different means of representation, for e.g. illustration through producing media to maximize transfer of information. It will be used at the end of the active learning activity in a flipped model (learners can start to practice in class and complete the assignment at home during their own time). Videos/comic strips will be played/displayed around the school to promote awareness. In order to reduce extraneous processing, manage essential processing, and foster generative processing, the assignment gives learners the freedom to choose which media they prefer. In terms of addressing media literacy concerns, learners are advised to first look at copyright issues when using materials from the Internet or posting materials on the Internet (see assignment instructions).

In this exercise we will use advanced find-and-replace capabilities in a word processing application in order to make use of structure in a brief historical document that is essentially a table in the form of prose. Without using a general programming language, we will gain exposure to some aspects of computational thinking, especially pattern matching, that can be immediately helpful to working historians (and others) using word processors, and can form the basis for subsequent learning with more general programming environments.
