"Certain gut microbes and their metabolites contribute to the progression of benign colorectal adenoma (CRA) into colorectal cancer (CRC), but the specific microbes, metabolites, and mechanisms involved are unclear. To learn more, researchers recently analyzed stool samples from patients with CRA or CRC and normal control (NC) subjects. The levels of certain stool metabolites significantly differed among the groups. For example, myristic acid and norvaline became more abundant with progression from health to CRC. The CRC-associated metabolites were largely branched- chain amino acids and aromatic amino acids and were involved in aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis pathways. A metabolite “signature” distinguished CRC samples from NC samples and CRC samples from CRA samples and the relationships among CRC-related metabolites and gut bacteria differed in the different sample types..."

An interactive applet and associated web page that demonstrate the alternate exterior angles that are formed where a transversal crosses two lines. The applets shows the two possible pairs of angles alternating when in animation mode. By dragging the three lines, it can be seen that the angles are congruent only when the lines are parallel. When not in animated mode, there is a button that alternates the two pairs of angles. The text on the page discusses the properties of the angle pairs both in the parallel and non-parallel cases. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector. Students today develop proficiency with many different algorithms for multiplication. This approach insures that each student will find a method that works effectively for him/her. Teachers model the different algorithms and encourage students to use and practice each method before selecting a favorite.
This study used an organizational socialization lens to examine factors influencing participants’ choice to pursue the principalship and an alternate administration certification program. Through an analysis of participants’ interviews, factors emerged from the codes that were compared with dimensions of a socialization framework. A key finding from this study is the intersection of socializing factors that influenced participants’ decisions to pursue the principalship and their decision to pursue an alternative preparation programs. This intersection impacted how these aspiring and current principals came to participate in the alternate preparation program.

Global temperatures continue to be affected by the combustion of fossil fuels and the subsequent release of carbon dioxide. This 3-week unit is designed to give 9th grade physical science or environmental science student an introduction to climate change, how humans are influencing it, and what efforts we can make to help limit or prevent it. Topics necessary for this unit include electricity, circuits, greenhouse gases, alternative energies, embodied energy, payback period, and life cycle assessments. This unit functions as a culminating project incorporating all of the topics listed above and challenges students to conduct research, engineer their own alternative energy solutions and prove their efficiency through calculation. Individually or in pairs students must pick an alternative energy, spend a day or more researching it, a day drawing a blueprint for it and creating a materials list, two or three days building model “power plants” to light 3 LEDs, and two to three days writing summary research papers. The quantitative analysis of their models (included in their research papers) and student’s ability to prove their models environmental superiority over fossil fuels will be weighted heavily.

Is climate change real? Yes, it is! And technologies to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions are being developed. One type of technology that is imperative in the short run is biofuels; however, biofuels must meet specifications for gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel, or catastrophic damage could occur. This course will examine the chemistry of technologies of bio-based sources for power generation and transportation fuels. We'll consider various biomasses that can be utilized for fuel generation, understand the processes necessary for biomass processing, explore biorefining, and analyze how biofuels can be used in current fuel infrastructure.

"Autophagy is an important cellular recycling process that degrades misfolded proteins and damaged organelles. In typical (“canonical”) autophagy, membranes derived from the endoplasmic reticulum surround damaged materials that need to be degraded, and the proteins Atg5 and Atg7 help form specialized digestion compartments (autophagosomes), but another type of autophagy, called alternative autophagy, was recently discovered. In alternative autophagy, the membranes that envelop the damaged materials are derived from the trans-Golgi membrane, and Atg5 and Atg7 do not participate in autophagosome formation. Alternative autophagy seems to be activated primarily under conditions of cell stress, and it plays roles in many diseases, such as heart disease, neurodegenerative disease, cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and bacterial infection..."

Alternative futures studies are a valuable yet resource-intensive way in which environmental scientists try to conduct informed debates about policies for specific geographic regions. These studies require modeling what the future would look like if different stakeholder groups had their way. The modeling is carried out by applying historical trend data to future projections that are rooted in the preferences of the different groups. Alternative future studies can be controversial due to the limitations of modeling and to the extent to which the models represent fully the different possible scenarios. Yet, they can be especially valuable for decision making about which areas in the region would be most appropriate and most acceptable for the applications of different policies such as development and restoration. Through a series of hands-on classroom activities that are the culmination of a variety of field trips, case studies, and analyses of GIS data about river systems and river restoration options, the students build deep understanding about what alternative futures studies entail and what are the applications of such studies to specific rivers in the Puget Sound area.
