This course presents a top-down approach to communications system design. The course will cover communication theory, algorithms and implementation architectures for essential blocks in modern physical-layer communication systems (coders and decoders, filters, multi-tone modulation, synchronization sub-systems). The course is hands-on, with a project component serving as a vehicle for study of different communication techniques, architectures and implementations. This year, the project is focused on WLAN transceivers. At the end of the course, students will have gone through the complete WLAN System-On-a-Chip design process, from communication theory, through algorithm and architecture all the way to the synthesized standard-cell RTL chip representation.

To be able to understand the importance of the environment for our health, we need to know a little about the interdependence between environment and humankind. This unit will look at interactions between plants, animals and the physical and chemical environment, as well as considering ways in which humans have altered, and are altering this environment. These changes have health implications that are not always immediately obvious. Frequently, we initiate changes that are going to have their effects some time in the future, and we will be looking at the legacies that we leave to future generations. We move on to consider our own demise, and ask what exactly it is that we think we will be leaving for those who follow.

Students are often confused by the concepts of stable isotope signatures and conventional notation. This activity is designed to introduce students to the del notation (isotopic signature), fractionation, and end member mixing of stable isotopes using familiar objects disguised as isotopes. The activity does not explain the physical manifestation of why isotopic fractionation occurs, but does explain the concepts that one easily observes when interpreting stable isotope data sets.

The patient is a 57-year old female with a past medical history of thyroidectomy, hysterectomy, and papillary fibroepithelial hyperplasia of the buccal mucosa. She presented with a three-month history of progressive vertigo, ataxia, and posterior headache. Physical examination revealed lateral nystagmus, dysdiadochokinesis and ataxia.

This lesson seeks to engage in discussions about relationships, emotional, and physical relatedness, and whether biological connections are the only connections that make a family. Understanding how society has traditionally defined family may not be the way we define it – and that’s okay. In this lesson, participants will expand their knowledge of a more involved family tree. When it comes to describing family/kinship, does a biological connection hold more weight, or do emotional connections that develop over time hold equal importance? Understanding relationships, values, and what resonates as important is helpful in practicing and engaging critical thinking skills.

This book covers the material normally presented in a two-term course on numerical analysis, starting with the basic concept and ending with topics that are more appropriate for a course in numerical analysis for differential equations: numerical solution of systems of linear and nonlinear equations, polynomial interpolation, numerical approximation of functions, numerical computation of eigenvalues, numerical derivation and integration, numerical solution of ordinary and partial differential equations.
With a focus on algorithms, it can be used as an introduction to numerical analysis for engineering and applied science students. With a focus on theory, it can be used as an introduction to numerical analysis for students in mathematics or physics. Most of the numerical methods presented in this book are accompanied by a MATLAB code.

This online material offers to student a pleasant and fun environment to achieve the development of learning. Online learning can replace a good portion of in-person class time, thus reducing the need for on-campus meetings. In this time, students will have the chance to interact with tasks related to sports. Basically, those materials are made for students of physical education, health and sports, who are attending the first level of English. Students will encounter reading activities, matches, wordsearch puzzle, listening exercises, speaking tasks and so on. In one way or another, learner will be in contact all the time with the sports issue.

This interactive resource adapted from the National Park Service illustrates the difference between explosive and effusive volcanic eruptions as well as the hazards that can result, including lahars, tsunamis, and lava flows.
The key factor in getting more efficient and cheaper solar energy panels …
The key factor in getting more efficient and cheaper solar energy panels is the advance in the development of photovoltaic cells. In this course you will learn how photovoltaic cells convert solar energy into useable electricity. You will also discover how to tackle potential loss mechanisms in solar cells. By understanding the semiconductor physics and optics involved, you will develop in-depth knowledge of how a photovoltaic cell works under different conditions. You will learn how to model all aspects of a working solar cell. For engineers and scientists working in the photovoltaic industry, this course is an absolute must to understand the opportunities for solar cell innovation.

Who Needs AEM? If a student is...
unable to read or use grade level materials at a sufficient rate and with adequate comprehension to complete academic tasks with success relative to same-age peers or cannot do this independently or across environments or tasks, then the student may need AEM. For example, students with visual impairments may not be able to see a textbook, students with physical disabilities may not be able to turn a page, and students with learning disabilities whose decoding abilities are significantly below grade level may require support - all these students may require AEM.

Physical examination revealed a firm, palpable area in the sacrococcygeal region. The skin overlying this mass was intact, with some erythema and bluish discoloration. A computed tomography scan showed a 10 x 9 x 8 cm soft tissue mass in the sacrococcygeal region.

This video is meant to be a fun, hands-on session that gets students to think hard about how machines work. It teaches them the connection between the geometry that they study and the kinematics that engineers use -- explaining that kinematics is simply geometry in motion. In this lesson, geometry will be used in a way that students are not used to. Materials necessary for the hands-on activities include two options: pegboard, nails/screws and a small saw; or colored construction paper, thumbtacks and scissors. Some in-class activities for the breaks between the video segments include: exploring the role of geometry in a slider-crank mechanism; determining at which point to locate a joint or bearing in a mechanism; recognizing useful mechanisms in the students' communities that employ the same guided motion they have been studying.

The subject introduces the principles of ocean surface waves and their interactions with ships, offshore platforms and advanced marine vehicles. Surface wave theory is developed for linear and nonlinear deterministic and random waves excited by the environment, ships, or floating structures. Following the development of the physics and mathematics of surface waves, several applications from the field of naval architecture and offshore engineering are addressed. They include the ship Kelvin wave pattern and wave resistance, the interaction of surface waves with floating bodies, the seakeeping of ships high-speed vessels and offshore platforms, the evaluation of the drift forces and other nonlinear wave effects responsible for the slow-drift responses of compliant offshore platforms and their mooring systems designed for hydrocarbon recovery from large water depths. This course was originally offered in Course 13 (Department of Ocean Engineering) as 13.022. In 2005, ocean engineering subjects became part of Course 2 (Department of Mechanical Engineering), and this course was renumbered 2.24.
