Framework for Accessible and Equitable Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Education
Unrestricted Use

0.0 stars

This is a practical guide to the dizzying domain of artificial intelligence within the education ecosystem, with a particular focus on the impact on equity and accessibility. AI and accessibility are beginning to have an interesting conversation. Not unlike the conversation about AI in general, the conversation about AI and accessibility in education can be found taking a techno-solutionist or techno-tragedist perspective. As we grow wary of this false dichotomy, we move toward what is much more likely to be the case: that it will be “both/and” and “neither/nor.” AI can make things better. It can benefit us all, it can address inequities, and it can lower barriers for people with disabilities in education. It can equally be used to amplify inequities (intentional and unintended), including discrimination against people who do not fit a “norm.”

From Fashion to Food: Students Explore Waste and Sustainability from Local and Global Perspectives

In September 2022, students from Centennial College’s Community Development Work Program did a deep dive into the topic of waste. Students from the Sustainable Community Development class dug into these topics and produced a book exploring six different dimensions of waste: fashion, plastics in the ocean, e-waste, food waste, sewage, and medical waste. Small groups of students worked on each topic and came back together to teach each other about what they were learning. The class was made up of students from around the world, and so they researched the topic of waste in Canada, but also drew on their experiences to research the topics globally in countries like the Philippines, India, and China. Students also highlighted one article per topic that brought new perspectives to their research.

Each chapter illuminates both the problems that exist, and also the sustainable and innovative solutions that are being found. In the spirit of collaboration, these chapters were edited and published by students in the Centennial College Publishing Program and the Open Educational Resources (OER) Lab.

Graphic Design and Print Production Fundamentals

This textbook -- written by a group of select experts with a focus on different aspects of the design process, from creation to production -- addresses the many steps of creating and then producing physical, printed, or other imaged products that people interact with on a daily basis. It covers the concept that, while most modern graphic design is created on computers using design software, the ideas and concepts don’t stay on the computer. The ideas need to be completed in the computer software, then progress to an imaging (traditionally referred to as printing) process. Keywords are highlighted throughout and summarized in a Glossary at the end of the book, and each chapter includes exercises and suggested readings.

George Arvola (1948-2016) was a guitarist and music teacher. He created his own series of guitar method books entitled Guitar Fundamentals. Volumes 2-5 of this series are based on approximately 600 pages of music manuscript by Tony Bradan (1913-1999) entitled A Learning Process for Playing the Guitar, which Tony entrusted to George. These books outline a process by which serious, dedicated students can gain:the ability to read standard notation for guitar, skill in applying efficient pick control and left hand fingering, an intimate knowledge of the guitar fretboard and flexibility in finding efficient fingerings for melodies, scales, triads, arpeggios and 3- and 4-part chords in real time, the ability to play accompaniment, the ability to play 4-part harmony, chord resolutions and voice movement, and the basics of improvisation. We are preserving this guitar method online in the hope that present and future generations of guitarists will benefit from the innovative approaches within.
