Students will take active roles in learning the game of chess and improving their skills, ability, and knowledge of the game. Students will read the course material, complete practice drills for each module, complete and submit all assessments and submit properly recorded (notated) games that they played. Course content includes: rules, strategy, tactics and algebraic notation (the 'language' of chess).

Choosing Between Home Appliances: Benefits to the Planet and Your Wallet
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted
CC BY-NC-SA
Rating
0.0 stars

Students research various options for new appliances and make purchasing decisions based not merely on purchase price, but also on energy efficiency, which has implications for the planet AND for longer-term personal finances. Students calculate the "payback period" for the more energy efficient appliance and calculate long-term savings.

The Circle and The Line
Unrestricted Use

Although this task is fairly straightforward, it is worth noticing that it does not explicitly tell students to look for intersection points when they graph the circle and the line. Thus, in addition to assessing whether they can solve the system of equations, it is assessing a simple but important piece of conceptual understanding, namely the correspondence between intersection points of the two graphs and solutions of the system.

This task shows that the three perpendicular bisectors of the sides of a triangle all meet in a point, using the characterization of the perpendicular bisector of a line segment as the set of points equidistant from the two ends of the segment. The point so constructed is called the circumcenter of the triangle.

Mathematics involves many different types of numbers. It is important that you can classify and name numbers and expressions. In this seminar you will go beyond the basics and learn about various types of expressions called polynomials. You will explore terminology affiliated with polynomials and classify them based on their degree.  You will also use past knowledge on how to simplify and combine like terms. You will use the techniques learned in this seminar to then perform operations on various types of polynomials such as adding, subtracting, and multiplying moving forward.StandardsCC.2.2.HS.D.3Extend the knowledge of arithmetic operations and apply to polynomials.CC.2.2.HS.D.6Extend the knowledge of rational functions to rewrite in equivalent forms.

I would recommned using this task after feeling confident in your students' understanding of the properties of a parallelogram. While it could serve as a review, I think it is best suited as in introductory piece to get students to see how the properties have a trickle down effect to other quadrilaterals.

After introducing the properties of parallelograms to students, this activity is a good introductory piece (with a little creativity). Encourage students to engage with the story and add their own details, as well as highlight the relationships between the special parallelograms. Remixed from: Classifying Special Parallelograms by Mitch Curtis

This unit was developed for a junior level pre-Calculus class to be taught during the first quarter of the 2016-17 school year. The lessons of the unit will culminate in each group of students creating and analyzing a mathematical model to predict the future impacts of climate change in New Hampshire and make a presentation as a group. The texts and historic data source, while specific to New Hampshire, may be of interest to other regions of the country. However, state climate change reports and climate data specific to your location may be available through state universities and meteorological stations.

A Closer Look at Natural Disasters Using GIS
Read the Fine Print
Educational Use
Rating
0.0 stars

As if they are environmental engineers, student pairs are challenged to use Google Earth Pro (free) GIS software to view and examine past data on hurricanes and tornados in order to (hypothetically) advise their state government on how to proceed with its next-year budget—to answer the question: should we reduce funding for natural disaster relief? To do this, students learn about maps, geographic information systems (GIS) and the global positioning system (GPS), and how they are used to deepen the way maps are used to examine and analyze data. Then they put their knowledge to work by using the GIS software to explore historical severe storm (tornado, hurricane) data in depth. Student pairs confer with other teams, conduct Internet research on specific storms and conclude by presenting their recommendations to the class. Students gain practice and perspective on making evidence-based decisions. A slide presentation as well as a student worksheet with instructions and questions are provided.

Club Function

Students explore the definition of a function by playing an interactive game called "Club Function." The goal of the game is to be in the club! With students each assigned to be either a zebra or a rhinoceros, they group themselves according to the "rules" of the club function. After two minutes, students freeze in their groups, and if they are not correctly following the rules of the club function, then they are not allowed into the "club." Through this activity students come to understand that one x-coordinate can only have one corresponding y-coordinate while y-coordinates can have many x-coordinates that correspond to it.

This resource consists of a Java applet and expository text. The applet is a simulation of the experiment that consists of tossing a coin and then rolling either a red die or a green die, depending on the outcome of the coin toss. The probability of heads and the distributions of the two dice can be specified. The applet illustrates a two-stage experiment.
