This inquiry leads students through an investigation of how a bill becomes a law in Nebraska, and how the law regarding the use of motorcycle helmets in Nebraska changed. Resource created by Brian Johnson, Wakefield Community Schools, as part of the Nebraska ESUCC Social Studies Special Projects 2023 - Inquiry Design Model (IDM).

Students will create a beginning resume that represents their current work experience and demonstrates their knowledge of rhetorical situations for professional writing.

Designed for upper elementary, but can be used at any age for a warm up or station activity. Can bedone in a regular classroom, physical education class or at home. Great fitness activity done with using only a deck of cards.

Throughout this project, students will research historical influences on fashion through the lens of a fashion historian. The lesson gives the students the prompt, “You are a fashion historian at the Smithsonian and your boss with the Clothing & Accessories division wants you to put together a virtual collection of textile garments that represent the 1900s You will be researching and finding historical garments and fashions using the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Historic Costume Collection database.” Students will find a garment in the collection from each of the decades listed and fill in the information as prompted in the template.  This lesson is designed to take 2 class periods (50 minutes). It would be excellent to use as a project before a break or at the end of a unit. NOTE - If you reside close to Lincoln, Nebraska, it would be fun to take a field trip to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to be shown the Historic Costume Collection and to have the Textile, Merchandising and Fashion Design faculty tell you about specific garments, etc.

This inquiry is designed for students to explore history through some of the historical markers in Nebraska and recognize places that have yet to be recognized as historically significant. Resource created by Mandy Morava, Crawford Public Schools, as part of the Nebraska ESUCC Social Studies Special Projects 2022 - Inquiry Design Model (IDM).

Students take notes and read articles about how life changed for humans because of the introduction of agriculture.  Students play “MasterMind” using the dates of significant changes in agriculture and complete a worksheet while researching historical events that have impacted agriculture.

OverviewThis lesson introduces students to historic medical discoveries by focusing on the individuals and medical innovations that advanced the field. Students will create “About Me” pages for individuals and create a presentation about medical innovations. Finally, a timeline is created for students to identify trends and reflect on the importance of history to the field.  StandardsHS.HS.6.1.a Identify the history of health care.

In this activity students will practice discussing their likes, dislikes, and hobbies. Students will play charades to help reinforce vocabulary. Students will then use the charades cards to discuss their favorite hobbies and ask one another about which hobbies and activities they enjoy.

 This Remote Learning Plan was created by Tami Hughson in collaboration with Dorann Avey as part of the 2020 ESU-NDE Remote Learning Plan Project. Educators worked with coaches to create Remote Learning Plans as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.The attached Remote Learning Plan is designed for Grade 7 English Language Arts students. Students will analyze and evaluate the elements of literary text, build background knowledge to clarify text and deepen understanding, and use relevant evidence from a variety of sources to assist in analysis and reflection of complex text. This Remote Learning Plan addresses the following NDE Standard: NE LA 7.1.6B, NE LA 7.4.1A, NE LA 7.2.1B, NE LA 7.3.2CIt is expected that this Remote Learning Plan will take students 90 minutes to complete.

Home Town Map
(art + social studies)
As basic as it seems, young children need to be taught to be observant and aware of their surroundings. This lesson plan helps children in grades K–3 pay more attention to the world around them as they travel back and forth between their homes and their schools. As they create maps of their route, they’ll learn about distance, signs, symbols, landmarks and other things that will reinforce the quickest — and safest — way for them to get to school and back home again. As their classroom teacher or art teacher, you can help your students identify familiar landmarks and create images that reinforce what they already know about their daily journey.

Older students can build more details into their maps, such as weather maps or treasure maps, as well as more complex legends, keys and measurements. Whatever the age of your students, you can help them make this exercise fun!

Both groups of students can take advantage of free city maps and state maps provided by the Department of Transportation and state agencies. Phone books also often include city maps and historical maps. Students will learn that map-making and map-reading can be fun as they trace rivers, parks and the world outside their home and school.

Note: instructions and materials based on a class of 25 students. Adjust as needed.

 "Homeless," by Anna Quindlen, allows the student to understand homelessness as it affects many people on a broader scale. She emphasizes the individuality of homelessness, the fact that they not only lack possessions but have no place to keep them."The First" (also titled "Eviction") is a short poem by Lucille Clifton that provides the opportunity to compare and contrast the approach to the same issue through another genre.In "The Glass Castle" by Jeannette Walls the parents choose to live as homeless students.  Students will compare and contrast the Walls' view of homelessness with Quindlen's and Clifton's.Final Assessment: How do Anna Quindlen and Lucille Clifton use language to convince the reader that their arguments have value? (focus on use of specific language, word choice, mood, tone, etc.)  Would Walls agree?

This inquiry leads students through an investigation of the legacy of the Homestead Act of 1862 by having students analyze the impact of the law on European settlers and American Indians since the law did not equally benefit both groups of individuals.
