Skyscrapers are one of the most glorified products of Civil Engineering and contain an interesting history of progress and development. In this lesson, the students will learn about the history of the world's tallest free standing structures and the basic design principles behind their success. Students will build their own newspaper skyscrapers with limited materials and time, trying to achieve a maximum height and the ability to withstand a "hurricane wind" force. Discussion will concentrate on materials, forces that a skyscraper needs to withstand, and basic structural design.

Students explore why different types of sneakers are used in a variety of common sports, and how engineers analyze design needs in sneakers and many other everyday items. The goal is for students to understand the basics of engineering associated with the design of athletic shoes. The design of footware based on how it will be used involves bioengineering. Students analyze the foot movements in a variety of sports, develop design criteria for a specific sport, and make recommendations for requirements for the sneakers used in that sport.

Students continue their pyramid building journey, acting as engineers to determine the appropriate wedge tool to best extract rock from a quarry and cut into pyramid blocks. Using sample materials (wax, soap, clay, foam) representing rock types that might be found in a quarry, they test a variety of wedges made from different materials and with different degrees of sharpness to determine which is most effective at cutting each type of material.

Solubility tests are one method used to identify fiber content of fabric. Throughout this lesson, students will work in groups to learn about solubility tests and conduct a lab where they complete solubility tests to identify fibers. This lesson is designed to take one 50-minute class period. To grade this assignment, I like to use their justifications for why they think it was a certain fiber, instead of just assessing if they selected the right fiber for the sample.  For this lab, you can either conduct the tests as a class and have all of the students observe one set of samples OR you can have groups of students conduct the experiments. It just depends on the size of your class and the volume of supplies, swatches, chemicals, and jars you have available.

Interior designing is a multi-functional profession in which creative ideas and many type of technical solution are applied within a structure so as to build an effective interior environment. In the whole process of designing different type of things are involved such as plans and evaluation, including lighting, power location and furniture layout. There are two major things which need to be considered properly such as:-·         Designs that are building are aesthetically attractive and functional. The designs are created according to the physical location and social context of project.·         In the interior design it follows a systematic approach and coordinated methodology which includes various types of research and proper knowledge towards the designing process.Interior design is professionally done by the interior decorators. Now days many people learn interior decoration courses and apply various techniques at their own. The main objective of interior decoration is to make house more pleasing and unique, since it should always reflects the owner personality.The definition of designer refers to ‘build interior environment’ and the other side decorator work include’ decorating and furnishing’. The main responsibility of designer is related to flooring, windows, lighting and renovations of furniture. It is very difficult for designer to understand the exact needs of company leader. On the other hand interior design is an architectural of building and many interior designers work with architects and builds according to owner choices. This process involves choices around room layout and according to tiles. A creative person can do interior design without any type of training and those people who are gifted with creative minds can provide shape to their ideas in their house. Recently a lot of decorators have also introduced color of gold into design.Interior designer can make specific atmosphere easily according to the required theme of the owner. A designer can fully alter the needs of his/her client.  An interior designer can make a small room to a spectacular room. Many people may think that hiring any type of interior designer is a very expensive task but in reality it totally depends upon the type of things which clients want to add in the designing process. However most of the designers work according to the budget of the client. Also there are many opportunity for interior designers these days. With the modern day designing many shopping malls, construction sites and building require latest designs which can really attract public in huge numbers.Feng shui designIt is one of the most popular interior design. It requires more study because Feng shui design is based on the ancient method of Chinese. In this design the structure of design needs to be accurate as it allows more positive energy to enter in structure, thereby making it look more real and attractive. By making the interior decoration according to Feng shui design there are some myth that it can bring positive energy in the room and as a result it can make any person rich and happy. This design can also remove negative energy and get rid of bad spirits.

To ensure your survival beyond Earth's occupation you must design a shelter that can be built on another planet." Then students research the characteristics of a planet of their choosing. They design shelter that enables them to survive on a new planet, and explain it in words to the rest of the class. This is a great activity to add to a unit on the solar system.

This class focuses on representation tools used by architects during the design process and attempts to discuss the relationship they develop with the object of design. Representation plays a key role in architectural design, not only as a medium of conveying and narrating a determined meaning or a preconceived idea, but also as a code of creating new meaning, while the medium seeks to establish a relationship with itself. In this sense, mediums of representation, as external parameters to the design process, are not neutral tools of translating an idea into its concrete form. They are neither authentic means of creativity, nor vapid carriers of an idea. Therefore, an important aspect in issues of meaning is how the architect manipulates the play of translating a concept to its concrete version, through the use of a medium of representation. The course is a continuation of the equivalent course taught in the fall semester and specifically focuses on digital media. The course is intended to establish a reciprocal relationship with the design studio, feeding from and contributing to its content.

The course investigates e-Learning systems from a business, policy, technical and legal perspective. The issues presented will be tackled by discussion of the design and structure of the various example systems. The connection between information architectures and the physical workplace of the users will also be examined. The course will be comprised of readings, discussions, guest speakers and group design sessions. The Springfield Studio is a practicum design course that focuses on the physical, programmatic, and social renewal of an urban community in Springfield, Massachusetts by combining classroom work with an applied class project. The course content covers the areas of physical design/urban design and the related analysis and planning tools used to understand and assess urban conditions from a design and development perspective. Urban design issues are investigated in the context of social and economic challenges within the community. Thus, the course has dual goals:

analyze physical conditions in the community, assess community need, propose physical design interventions; and
assess community capacity and programmatic needs.

The ultimate goal is to explore the integration of social, programmatic and physical development interventions in ways that reinforce community revitalization efforts, and to apply this knowledge through the development of a formal neighborhood revitalization plan that addresses community needs.
