The aim of this presentation is to expand the students’ knowledge about treatment of chronic infections in relation to orthopedic surgery. In the field of orthopedic surgery, several chronic infections exist and sometimes they combine.

In this presentation, we will discuss how to treat chronic infections. In continuation of this, we will discuss some of the issues that one might consider when treating biofilm-associated infections.

Bacteria often get a bad rap, but they’re some of our best partners in science and medicine! In this episode, we’ll explore what bacteria are doing with their DNA — including how they can trade it around. We’ll learn about chromosomes and plasmids, gene expression and recombinant DNA, and how E. coli are used to make insulin.

In order to use digitized text without having to manually transcribe it or laboriously cut and paste it, Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is often used. Using two scanned pages from Virginia Woolf’s novel The Waves, the following screencast offers some basic instruction on how to OCR scanned pages. A few choices of OCR software are also briefly evaluated.

A free, community version of a popular OCR software is tested as well as a free, web-based version and the quality of these is examined. Finally a trial version of a moderately expensive software is tested and evaluated.
