This curriculum focuses on issues related to mental health service utilization and outcomes among children in the child welfare system. In spite of the documented need for mental health services for these children, there is a lack of information on children involved with both the child welfare and mental health systems. In order to improve our understanding of the issues and needs of this population, this curriculum focuses on five areas: (a) demographic and system-related characteristics of children involved in both the child welfare and mental health systems; (b) clinical need for services, service utilization patterns, and association between mental health service utilization and child welfare outcomes; (c) policies affecting mental health service utilization by children in the child welfare system; (d) collaboration between child welfare and mental health systems; and (e) resources for collaboration and service provision for children and youth in both the child welfare and mental health systems. The curriculum will provide research highlights, conceptual frameworks, tools, and experiential opportunities to strengthen understanding of a wide range of issues related to mental health service utilization among children in the public child welfare system. Published on Feb 17, 2015 Childhood trauma isn’t something you just get over as you grow up. Pediatrician Nadine Burke Harris explains that the repeated stress of abuse, neglect and parents struggling with mental health or substance abuse issues has real, tangible effects on the development of the brain. This unfolds across a lifetime, to the point where those who’ve experienced high levels of trauma are at triple the risk for heart disease and lung cancer. An impassioned plea for pediatric medicine to confront the prevention and treatment of trauma, head-on.
Access and explore large datasets from the National Health and Nutrition Examination …
Access and explore large datasets from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, 2003). Working with large datasets that emphasize exploration, finding patterns, and modeling is an essential first step in becoming fluent with data. This activity is a great place for students to start, since the dataset is straightforward and students can decide on the data they want to explore, including height, age, weight, and many other health-related attributes. Students begin by selecting and then investigating subsets of the dataset, for example, to find the cholesterol level of U.S. citizens. Then, working with their classmates or individually, students can try their own data science challenges, such as finding health trends in a subset of Americans by their household income, age, or marital status, etc. This activity is embedded in the Common Online Data Analysis Platform (CODAP). Learn more about teaching with CODAP, or use the Getting Started in CODAP tutorial.

Since the /ɹ/ phoneme is difficult to produce and may be complex to instruct due to the different tongue positions, as well as the puzzle-like nature in figuring out whether the client uses a bunched or retroflexed tongue position, I pose the following question: For individuals who have difficulty producing the /ɹ/ phoneme, is there a greater impact on mental health, self-esteem, and social interaction in comparison to those who have difficulty with phonemes that are not the /ɹ/ phoneme?
