Students randomly select jelly beans (or other candy) that represent genes for several human traits such as tongue-rolling ability and eye color. Then, working in pairs (preferably of mixed gender), students randomly choose new pairs of jelly beans from those corresponding to their own genotypes. The new pairs are placed on toothpicks to represent the chromosomes of the couple's offspring. Finally, students compare genotypes and phenotypes of parents and offspring for all the "couples" in the class. In particular, they look to see if there are cases where parents and offspring share the exact same genotype and/or phenotype, and consider how the results would differ if they repeated the simulation using more than four traits.

As proteomics researchers know well, identifying post-translational modifications in biological samples can be tedious. Enriching samples with target modifications, such as the attachment of acetyl , succinyl or methyl groups to amino acid residues, and matching experimental data with catalogued results involves numerous steps. And the work load is only getting bigger. With exploding interest in how multiple modifications are linked across the vast proteome , the amount of time and the amount of sample required for exploration are skyrocketing in proportion. A man in his forties with a history of basal cell carcinoma of the nose and a benign neoplasm of the jaw, status post resection with mandibular reconstruction, presented for routine follow-up. On chest x-ray workup, he was found to have numerous bilateral pulmonary nodules that were highly suspicious for a metastatic disease. A follow-up CT scan of the chest with contrast showed eight small round pulmonary nodules measuring few millimeters in size and a larger left lower lobe pulmonary mass measuring 3.0 x 3.1 cm in size. There was no evidence of hilar or mediastinal lymphadenopathy and no pleural nodularity or effusion on imaging.

"Abnormal wearing of the hip joint, or femoroacetabular impingement, and dysplasia represent the two most common causes of secondary osteoarthritis of the hip joint. These pathologies are known to produce distinctive chondral flaps visible during hip arthroscopy. But the destructive mechanics behind each diagnosis differ significantly. That makes treatment planning especially difficult for patients who show signs of both impingement and dysplasia. To provide some clarity, researchers examined 95 patients demonstrating acetabular chondral flaps during arthroscopy, with the goal of correlating those findings with radiographic data. The patterns that emerged could help surgeons deliver the best possible care for patients with mixed hip pathologies. Patients exhibited one of two types of chondral flaps upon examination: “inside-out” or “outside-in”..."
