In this course will focus on both biotic and abiotic systems. You will learn about ecosystems and their interactions, water (including surface water, ponds and lakes, groundwater, water quality), soils, and resources both renewable and non-renewable resources. You will also how the basic systems influence the ecosystems of the Earth. You will investigate threatened and endangered species in our world. Environmental health and the importance of agriculture are also discussed in terms of their impact on our ecosystems.

The Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering has concerns about the lack of knowledge amongst school pupils, and their teachers, of the type of work undertaken by an Environmental Engineer. The interactive presentation was developed as part of an awareness raising exercise for aspects of Environmental Engineering. Targeted at KS3 pupils particularly in Year 9 (Y9) the themes of air/ soil/water pollution were chosen because of their links to the KS3 National Curriculum for Science ( e.g. unit 9g Environmental Chemistry). The rationale behind the presentation was that visually it must be engaging and provide a clear indication of the consequences of actions but at the same time have questions using appropriate language that provide a basis for extending discussion / teaching beyond students/teachers current experience.

The presentation has been made available through our website and demonstrated at a variety of events where School Teachers meet e.g. 14-19 Conference ( School of Education) and PGCE Science Mentor Meetings ( School of Education).

Enzymes are biocatalyst they accelerate the chemical reaction. They are organic, all enzymes are made of protein but not all enzymes are protein. Certain biological reactions can be catalyzed by RNA called Ribozyme. Protein is a dynamic molecule; its activity depends on the three-dimensional structure. For example, the water droplet size gets flexible, if you touch. Protein folding and three-dimensional structures are vital for activity.  There is no living cell without an enzyme, in the living cell; it functions to accelerate the biological reaction. There is a misfolded protein infectious agent called Prion, which causes normal brain protein to misfold which, leads to neurodegratative disease. This module presents concise notes of enzyme basic concepts; bioinformatics tools and few examples of enzymes in everyday life.

Students explore the systems thinking concepts of equilibrium and nonequilibrium with a water pouring experiment. Students complete the activity at home or virtually with videos. Water is poured from a top container (reservoir) into a central cup (reservoir) with a small hole for water outflow at a different rate in each trial. Students observe what happens to the water level in the central container, graph the change in water level over time, and assess whether the central reservoir was in equilibrium or nonequilibrium for each trial.

Formative assessment questions using a classroom response system ("clickers") can be used to reveal students' spatial understanding.
Students are shown these diagrams and instructed to "Click in the river where you expect to find the greatest rate of erosion along the river bed."
A follow-up question asks students to "Click in the river where you expect to find the fastest moving water."
